}} As per the latest announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a new AIIMS will soon be established in Manipur under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Scheme of the Government of India.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Atma Nirbhar Bharat

Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Scheme, the Government of India is now working towards increasing manpower in the medical field. The step has been taken to offer medical assistance in times of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country.[10] The Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme aims to improve the overall medical infrastructure and facilities in the country. By increasing the number of AIIMS campuses under the ANB scheme, the government’s goal is to prevent the shortage of inadequate medical resources.

With the establishment of AIIMS in Manipur, the total count of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences in India will rise to 24. As of now, India has 19 fully functioning AIIMS campuses around the country, while the remaining 4 campuses are under construction.

AIIMS

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS, is known to be one of the leading government medical colleges in India. The institute was established in 1956 as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament. AIIMS offers both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses to interested and eligible candidates. The main goal of the institute is to provide education to students from all backgrounds and develop a nation with excellent medical facilities. To apply for courses offered by the institute, students are required to appear for the NEET Exam every year. Based on marks secured by candidates in the entrance examination, they are further selected for admission to the seats.[11]

Clarification

The Union Government has clarified that there is no proposal to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Manipur under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), and there is no provision to upgrade RIMS to the status of an AIIMS.[12]
