AI for social good
AI for Social Good (AI4SG) also known as "AI for Social Impact" is an area of Artificial Intelligence research which focuses on addressing pressing social, environmental and humanitarian challenges. Relatively nascent area of investigation, AI4SG research aims to deliver positive social impact in accordance to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)[1]. Consistent with academic work on ethics of artificial intelligence and AI alignment, countless initiatives are being undertaken by academia, government and industry to broaden the understanding AI4SG. An initiative of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), AI for Good Global Summit is a notable platform fostering development of AI to positively impact health, climate, gender, inclusive prosperity, sustainable infrastructure, and other global development priorities[2]. An industry example of AI4SG is Google AI's research initiative "Project Euphonia" aimed at translating dysarthric speech using machine learning algorithms to enable understanding individuals with non-standard speech.
Despite swiftly rising popularity of AI4SG initiatives globally, academics have argued that social good seemingly has a hazy definition in organizations undertaking such efforts, making it occasionally difficult to determine what application constitutes as "social good."[3] While some researchers in this area have identified a need for setting guiding factors to propel development of AI likely to serve for social good[4], others have identified a necessity of decolonizing and power-shifting advancement of AI for social good through human-centered, community-centered and context-specific methods[3]. Unlike traditional top-down applications of AI often based on utilitarian ethics, AI4SG research is concerned with methods of collaborative development and application to enhance human lives based on capabilities approach[3] which aims to identify the substantive liberties that human beings ought to have to flourish in society.
