ANYbotics is a Swiss robotics firm founded in 2016 as a spin-off from the ETH Zurich, specializing in the design and manufacturing of legged robots for industrial use.[1] The company is known for its robotic solution ANYmal for automated inspection of complex industrial facilities. ANYmal is used by global operators in oil & gas, power & renewables, chemicals, and mining & metals, including Petronas,[2] Petrobras,[3] BASF,[4] Outokumpu,[5] and Vale.[6]
History
The ANYbotics team has been building legged robots since 2009, progressing from research projects to fully functional demonstrators.
ANYbotics was established in 2016 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich to develop autonomous robots for industrial applications, starting with the legged robot, ANYmal.[7] In 2018, ANYmal was deployed at one of the world’s largest offshore converter platforms in the North Sea, operated by TenneT[8] ANYbotics launched in 2019 their ANYmal generation C robot optimized for industrial deployment with an integrated inspection payload and a docking station for autonomous recharging.[9] The company closed a series A funding round of CHF 20 million in 2020.[10] The successor ANYmal generation D launched in 2021 as an industrial-grade solution with deep learning based motion control for faster mobility on steep and narrow industrial stairs.[11] In 2022, ANYbotics introduced ANYmal X, the world’s first Ex-certified legged robot, enabling autonomous inspection in Oil&Gas and Chemical process areas. The company raised a $50 million series B in 2023 to scale deployments internationally, and to develop new capabilities.[12]
ANYmal

ANYmal is a safety-certified, ruggedized robot designed for measuring and assessing the condition of equipment and infrastructure in industrial sites. It operates in harsh environmental conditions. The robot utilizes AI-based software for mapping environments and efficiently completing inspection tasks.[13]
ANYmal X

ANYmal X is the world’s only industrial Ex-certified legged robot, designed for operation in hazardous and potentially explosive environments in the oil and gas, chemicals, and petrochemicals industries. ANYmal X is certified to operate in Zone 1 environments according to the IECEx and ATEX standards. It features advanced thermal management and a gas sensor for detecting noxious and harmful gases. ANYmal X provides the same mobility and functionality as ANYmal Gen. D with additional capabilities for operating in Ex-rated zones.[14]
