AUTO1 Group is a German online marketplace for the buying and selling of inspected used automobiles in the European Market based in Berlin. The company was founded in 2012 [1] by Christian Bertermann and Hakan Koç [2] and purchases used cars from private sellers and B2B partners and then resells them through its global network.[3]

AUTO1 Group was founded in Berlin in July 2012 by Christian Bertermann and Hakan Koç [4] and the same year the C2B brand wirkaufendeinauto.de was launched.

In 2013 AUTO1.com the online B2B marketplace for used cars, gets spun off.[1]

In 2014 the company expanded its European presence to France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Lithuania.[1]

In 2015 AUTO1.com Remarketing was launched and now enables direct transactions between affiliate merchants and the company expanded its presence to Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Finland, Estonia, Luxembourg, Portugal and Sweden.[1]

In 2016 AUTO1.com iOS and Android apps get launched. AUTO1 Group expanded to Denmark, Latvia and Bulgaria.

In 2017 the online dealership Autohero started in Germany. The group is expanded to Greece, Croatia, Norway, Albania, Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia and the company employs more than 3,000 people. Throughout 2017, AUTO1 Group has traded more than 420,000 vehicles over AUTO1.com, Autohero,[5] wirkaufendeinauto.de and its European sister brands. The dealer network increased to over 40,000 partners.[6]

In 2018 SoftBank Vision Fund invested €460m in the company.[7]

Business model[edit]

The holding company AUTO1 Group owns several companies and brands mostly operating in the automotive industry. Basically the group sources cars from private customers as well as B2B partners like leasing and rental companies, fleet operators and OEMs and sells them to private customers as well as partner dealers throughout Europe.[8] Prices are determined by its proprietary CORE pricing algorithm.[9][10]

wirkaufendeinauto.de and its European clone brands specialized in purchasing used cars from private car owners. The company states that since the foundation of the German model in 2012, the family purchased more than 1 million vehicles and operates more than 350 branches in 10 European countries.[11]

AUTO1.com is a B2B online marketplace for inspected used cars, with over 55,000 active partners across 30+ countries.[12]

  • B2B Purchasing: Stock of 40,000 tested vehicles for digital acquisition used by professional car dealers [13]
  • B2B Remarketing: Digital distribution of vehicles mainly used by dealer groups, leasing and rental companies, fleet operators and OEMs .

Joint venture - AUTO1 FinTech[edit]

AUTO1 FinTech is a joint venture of AUTO1 Group, Allianz and Deutsche Bank. It is an online provider of financing to partner dealers of AUTO1.com, the online B2B marketplace for the used car trade.[14] It provides floor plan finance and insurance products to car dealerships partnering with AUTO1.com.[15][16]
