AXSMarine is a French multinational provider of online tools and data for the shipping industry. The company has developed and integrated its own ecosystem of solutions ranging from vessel management tools to market intelligence platforms. AXSMarine also possesses its own proprietary databases of ships and ports for the dry bulk, tanker and liner market segments. Headquartered in Paris, the company employs over 160 personnel and has offices in the US, UK, Singapore and Bulgaria.[1]

History

Early Years

AXSMarine was founded in 2000 at the height of the dot-com boom among the competition of many other startups, which also aimed to digitalize the shipping industry. As the bubble burst, very few of them remained operational within 5 years.[2]

In 2001, AXSMarine launched its first platform called AXSDry, providing a chartering solution for the dry bulk sector. It came equipped with a voyage calculator allowing brokers to dynamically estimate the cost and profit of a freight voyage based on multiple variables.

In 2003, the company launched a principally similar service for the tanker shipping community named AXSTanker. In 2006, AXSMarine developed a new module for its products, calculating distances between any combination of ports worldwide.

In 2007, an exclusive partnership was signed with Alphaliner, a data portal and research tool for liner operators, fleet managers, shipbrokers, shipping investors and port authorities.[3] [4]

AIS Era

While AXSMarine's early tools incorporated some sophisticated programming solutions to help with the daily work of shipping professionals, database acquisition and maintenance still relied on manual input from its dedicated data teams.

In 2011, the company started embedding and automating the inclusion of AIS gathered data across its platforms. This allowed AXSMarine to develop a number of analytical tools based on advanced programming algorithms and the ever-increasing pool of data coming from satellites and shore-based antennas.

During the following years, AXSMarine has received multiple awards from the International Bulk Journal for best marine IT solutions and best innovative technology.[5]

Between 2012 and 2018, all of AXSMarine's platforms were constantly updated to include multiple advanced analytical tools. These included modules for detecting and tracking idle vessels, AIS research tools and automated systems detecting and updating vessel positions and cargoes from a user's emails. Further developments resulted in the implementation of ECA areas in AXSMarine's voyage and distance calculators, as well as a cargo-ship matching solution.[6]

In 2017, the company launched its Trade Flows solution – the pinnacle in its efforts to provide an AIS-based market analysis tool for brokers, charterers, traders and fleet analysts.

In 2018, Alphatanker was launched along with AXSMail, which automated the process of reviewing and analyzing email data. In the shipping industry in general, email flow is severely overwhelming creating the necessity of a dedicated app with a varying set of features compared to the mainstream email platforms.

In 2019, AXSMarine released its API Hub solution integrating REST webservices as a standard form of data injection and customization. AXSQ – a vessel questionnaire management system – was also developed and made free for access to the public.

In 2020, the company launched another AIS-data-powered solution called AXSInsights. It transformed heavy datasets into more digestible visual graphs and charts. A cloud-based storage solution called AXSDrive was also integrated into AXSMarine's various modules.

Products and Services

Core Solutions

All of AXSMarine's platforms have several key features in common. They are all online-based, requiring only an internet connection from their users. All personal settings and data are saved on cloud storage and encrypted for maximum security. Data privacy and sharing are of critical importance and thus implemented on multiple levels.

AXSDry

AXSMarine's first online solution is a combination of tools and data to support the requirements of modern-day brokers, charterers, traders, and analysts in the dry bulk industry. It includes live tonnage management, full technical and commercial details on over 20,000 dry cargo vessels, fixtures, and sales data, and live AIS feed.

AXSDry's various modules implement AIS intelligence tools to provide its users with a market overview, as well as a distance table, voyage calculator and freight matrices. The port database in AXSDry is optimized for the dry bulk industry covering specific ports, berths, anchorages worldwide and includes segregation by countries, zones and ranges.[7]

AXSDry also implements communication tools including an address book and message board modules. AXSDry data, provided by AXSMarine, is a database of integrated data on dry bulk carriers. Based on vessels, ports and contract information, AXSDry data records the pair of the arrival- and departure port, for each voyage, with commodity information and draft changes.[8]

AXSTanker

Released shortly after AXSDry, AXSTanker's development followed a similar set of objectives, customized towards the tanker shipping market. Most of its modules provide comparable tools to those of AXSDry with the database being principally different and covering the tanker fleet worldwide.

AXSTanker offers the same options as AXSDry when monitoring and researching port and bunker locations worldwide. AIS data feed is available in multiple modules within the platform. In addition to the standard technical vessel description available in AXSMarine's products, AXSTanker users have the option of exporting data to a standard questionnaire format.[9]

Alphaliner

Alphaliner provides its users with a number of features unique to the liner shipping industry. Global services are available through breakdowns by regions and alliances, as well as real-time AIS and historical data.

Alphaliner's global fleet database covers over 10,000 active vessels, while its Top 100 charts are constantly updated to provide the latest data on carriers, non-operating owners, and ports.

Alphaliner also includes a ready-to-use orderbook analysis module allowing breakdowns by country, shipyard, owner and operator.[10]

Alphatanker

AXSMarine's Alphatanker platform is similar on a surface level to the company's AXSTanker solution. However, Alphatanker is a much more recent release of the AXSMarine's tanker toolset and is principally aimed at a different segment of the market.[11]

Whereas AXSTanker's intended userbase is mainly shipbrokers, Alphatanker expands its functionalities to accommodate the needs of shipowners, cargo owners, oil majors, port agents, market analysts and other professionals within the tanker community.[12]

Data Intelligence

AXSMarine's proprietary databases are, in the company's own words, just as important as its software solutions for each market. After years of data accumulation, AXSMarine began developing several standalone modules, which can be used independently of its core solutions. Despite the ability to be run standalone, AXSMarine's data intelligence tools are also fully integrated within each core solution suite and can be used to complement them and vice versa.

Trade Flows

AXSMarine Trade Flows is a cutting-edge solution bringing a whole new level of transparency to the maritime world. A real big data application in the form of an online research tool for the Dry Bulk industry – enabling on-demand analysis of drybulk ship and commodity movements and trends, bringing users a competitive edge.[13]

Trade Flows was the first tool of the data intelligence set to be developed and released to the public. It uses advanced logarithms to filter, interpret and implement vast sets of AIS data, while also having a quality assurance team constantly verifying its integrity.

Trade Flows reveals trading patterns of vessels and commodities, which may remain hidden in some instances behind the sheer amount of data available in modern-day shipping. It allows its user to customize the analysis they're running by a range of parameters, as well as monitor any competitor's fleet. Trade Flows aims to provide data granularity on a macro, as well as a micro level.

AXSInsights

AXSInsights is one of the latest and most cutting-edge products created by AXSMarine. It was developed after taking into account public feedback of the company's Trade Flows modules having too extensive sets of data, which in turn proved challenging to analyze quickly for some of its users. The portal was born from a “search of a balanced solution combining the power of big data and the simplicity of a graphic presentation.[14] [15]

AXSInsights was designed to help with this particular scenario by providing its users with ready-to-use graphs and charts in a number of predefined analyses, as well as having the option to set custom filters for any of its reports. Users of the platform are able to quickly gain a grasp of market trends based on custom-created visuals, rather than grid tables of endless numbers.[16]

Cargobook

AXSMarine's Cargobook is a tool automating the process of identifying and sorting cargoes out of thousands of emails while seeking suitable vessels for their freight afterward. Its algorithms include email-to-data transformation and removal of data duplication, both of which are a hindrance to employee efficiency in modern-day shipping.

AXSMarine API Hub

The AXSMarine API Hub was created in order to allow users to extract AXSMarine's raw data and implement it with in-house systems or platforms of their choice. It implemented the functionalities of REST webservices in its development and resulted in the capability of quick integration and data injection in other systems. AXSMarine API Hub guarantees the best performance and highest level of safety for customers' data through mirroring across multiple locations, engineered to operate independently.[17]

AXSMarine API Hub provides its users with full data control to customize and complete their analysis, as well as the option to set up automatic data updates.[18] [19]

Management and Communication

AXSMail

AXSMail is AXSMarine's dedicated email management platform, developed specifically to address problems uniquely faced by shipping professionals. Its capabilities allow AXSMail users to deal with the daily overload of emails frequently encountered in the industry.

AXSMail also makes it possible to set up personal or team accounts, providing collaboration options to its users. It can store emails in a Cloud environment, or on a user's local storage depending on individual preferences. Apart from providing crucial email capabilities, such as conversation structuring, tagging, flagging, and commenting on email threads, AXSMail is also fully compatible with Microsoft's Office 365.[20]

AXSQ

AXSQ aims to provide unification and standardization in market segments, such as dry bulk, where the process of vessel acceptance and questionnaire submission is highly fragmented and varies in format with each port authority. AXSQ is a vessel questionnaire, certificate, and management system which allows the user to have their data and certificates in a single place, with the system filling out each separate questionnaire format as it's needed in real-time.[21] [22]

AXSQ includes a number of the industry's most used questionnaire formats, as well as options for the creation of a specific template at the user's request. The platform is free-to-access for the public.[23]

AXSQ is the new, state-of-the-art questionnaire and document management system, automating the document flow between owners, managers, brokers, operators, and charterers. Following workshops and day-to-day conversations with its customers, AXSMarine identified the vessel acceptance process with its document-heavy manual workflows as a pain point in daily working schedules, catalyzing the development of AXSQ.[24]
