A Child's Voice is a 2018 supernatural thriller film distributed online. While the film is fictional, it was made to shed light on the trafficking of children.[1] With regard to the film's mission, producer John Paul Rice said in a posted video, "If you go to UNICEF and you look up 'child sex trafficking' or 'human trafficking' you'll find a statistic, globally, worldwide, according to the United Nations, that 40 million people a year are trafficked around this world. 40 million. It's a 150 billion-dollar a year industry."[2] The plot centers around two teenagers, played by Joey Burke and Angela Mavropoulos, who are led by the ghost of a murdered child, played by Jonathan Matthew Wilson, to stand up to a network of human traffickers.
Plot[edit]
The film opens as Jacob, a shirtless boy, walks down a hall, but is soon captured then murdered by individuals in red robes surrounded by candles. That is not the end of Jacob, however, as he emerges from the top of the building as a spirit and bright ball of light, or orb, clearly visible in the night sky. Shortly thereafter, he begins his relationship with Tim, a homeless teenager, whom he talks to using a disembodied voice, which at first confuses Tim, but through visions and words gains his trust and enlists him in Jacob's mission to stop the "hurting" of human trafficking.
Jacob's murderer, Randolph, is a long-time human trafficker and part of a crime syndicate with demanding customers. They have competitors, and one of those competitors is Matt and Bill, who abducts two young girls. However, Randolph, through his associates, steals these girls away from Matt and sells them. In the process, Matt is apprehended and tortured by Randolph in order to deter him from competing and to get information about Matt's organization.
Kristy, who begins the movie as Matt's live-in girlfriend, argues with Matt and runs away from him before he abducts the young girls. She lives on the street for a night, but the next day, before the abduction of the girls, Matt and Bill try to kill her, but are unsuccessful in part because Jacob, through Tim, intervenes.
After an initial period of distrust, Kristy begins to trust and like Tim, who feeds her, gives her a place to stay, and buys her clothes. In the evening, they become romantic. The next day, Jacob gives Tim a vision, and through his voice encourages Tim to confront Randolph, whom he meets on the street. However, Kristy has a vision, and she meets Tim on the street and stops the confrontation. Together, they decide that instead of taking matters into their own hands, they will go to the police. However, at that moment, Randolph's crew abducts Tim and Kristy, who are taken to the same building where Matt was tortured, and where Jacob was murdered. Tim and Kristy are bound to chairs.
Randolph, along with his associate Daniel, attempts to make a deal with Tim, who refuses. After injuring Kristy and as the situation is about to escalate, Jacob intervenes, by making a deafening noise that debilitates Randolph and Daniel. Jacob, through powers, frees Tim. Tim then picks up a gun and shoots both Randolph and Daniel, and begins to free Kristy.
As Randolph lays helpless, Jacob appears as a boy. Randolph recognizes Jacob. He walks toward Randolph and says, "No more hurting," then places his fingers on Randolph's lips. Randolph dies. Tim witnesses this. Jacob then walks over to Kristy, who is still bound to the chair, and says, "Are you sad? No more hurting." He then places his fingers on Kristy's lips, in the same way, but he appears to help her, and she goes unconscious. Jacob then turns to Tim and asks him, "Are you sad?" Tim answers, "No. Yeah." Jacob gives him a compassionate look, then walks past him. Jacob lies down, then vanishes.
Tim and Kristy then walk out of the building and go back to the motel room to recuperate. Shortly after, Tim falls asleep and Kristy awakes. Then, one of the abducted girls from earlier, Maria, appears in the room. She tells Kristy that "they" took her sister (Berta). After speaking briefly, Kristy promises to help Maria. Then, Maria transforms into an orb and floats away from the motel, joining other orbs who are rising from the city in the night sky.
