A Fox In Space is a fan-made science fiction animated series based on the Star Fox video game series created by Nintendo. It is written, animated, and edited by artist Matthew Gafford, also known as "Fredryk Phox".[1]

Development[edit]

Unlike most internet cartoons, A Fox In Space is produced in a classic animation style similar to cel animation. By contrast, most internet cartoons produced in Adobe Flash rely on "motion-tweening".

An avid Star Fox fan, Gafford developed the series in response to a lack of television or theatrical adaptation to the video game series.[2] Early iterations of A Fox In Space were developed by Gafford in 2011 as one-minute animated shorts created on Adobe Flash under the moniker Star Fox: The Animated Series.[3] The name was later changed to avoid IP violations toward the Star Fox brand. These shorts were mainly animation tests or scenes depicting a glimpse into what an animated series based on Star Fox would look like. Production on full-length episodes of the webseries began in 2015.

A Fox In Space also parodies many elements of the Star Fox franchise and its fandom. The first episode "Don't Call Me Star Fox" satirises many fan rumours surrounding the original game's main character, Fox McCloud. Each episode also begins with a mock "Previously..." segment which gives a brief overview of already familiar story elements from the video games, before beginning the episode's own story.

As of November 2018, there are two episodes, with the second in development.

Characters[edit]

Primary[edit]

Fox McCloud: Leader of the Star Fox crew, known for his all-around leadership abilities and ties to his father James McCloud.

Falco Lombardi: The mechanic of the crew. Falco has a strong New York accent and is a loyal friend to Fox and the rest of the crew. He may not be the brightest of the crew, but he is regarded as one of the best pilots in Star Fox.[1]

Peppy Hare: The oldest member of the crew, Peppy used to work side by side with James McCloud. Now he works alongside the Star Fox crew and usually acts as the responsible character.[1]

Slippy Toad: Although he may not be the best in combat, Slippy is extremely keen for computer tech, and is known to be Info Tech guru of the Star Fox crew.[1]

Andross: The main antagonist who is out to get Fox McCloud, for reasons unknown.

Wolf O'Donnell: Fox's rival and one of the main antagonists of the series, known for being one of the toughest pilots from Academy according to Fox. Although he has a somewhat lighthearted attitude, Wolf works for Andross and has no problem committing crimes for money.[1]

Secondary[edit]

James McCloud: Fox's father. The protagonist of episode 2, he and Peppy are sent on a mission to Venom to stop Andross' diabolical plans.

General Pepper: Commander of Star Fleet who informs James and Peppy of Andross' schemes on Venom.

Beltino Toad: Slippy's father. A friend of James and Peppy and a member of Star Fox, he is kidnapped by thugs sent by Shears in order to reveal information of a new flying mechanism (the Arwing).

Pigma Dengar: A member of Star Fox who betrays James and Peppy to Andross.

Captain Shears: A corrupt captain of the Cornerian army who plans on obtaining information of the Arwing.

Fara Phoenix: A friend of Fox and girlfriend to Wolf in episode 2. She is very kind and doesn't really take any nonsense from Wolf despite dating him.

Bill Grey: A friend of Wolf and Fara who works on flying mechanisms.

Andrew Oikonny: Andross's nephew who is also a member of Star Wolf.

Leon Powalski: A member of Star Wolf.

Desslar Coba: An aye-aye with Arwing information for James seen in episode 2.

Fay Spaniel and Miyu Lynx: Two female friends who work with Bill on the flying mechanisms. They get along well with Wolf.

Original[edit]

Sonny van der Küt and Sagan Hachok: A bandicoot and hedgehog, respectively. They are sent by Shears to kidnap Beltino and force him to reveal important information of the Arwing. Their names and animal species are an inside joke to Sony and Sega, both of which are known for the "Crash Bandicoot" and "Sonic the Hedgehog" games, respectively.

Eckblade and Eckbalde: Lemur twin brothers who are sent by Andross to intercept James (Eckbalde is a mute who communicates through sign language).

Cason "Rizz" Rhys: A large hyena who plays the role of Andross' bodyguard.

Nora Bowman (née Andross): The daughter of Andross who goes missing, and James is sent by Andross to rescue her. Nora initially reacts hesitant and rather standoffish of James, but later earns his trust. Over time, they develop feelings for one another.

Cael O'Donnell: Wolf's father and acquaintance to James McCloud. During the events of episode 2, Fox is left at the O'Donnell's home while James goes on a mission.

Trip O'Donnell: Wolf's younger brother.

Tina Lombardi: Falco's mother who is briefly seen in a scene in episode 2.

Carlo Lombardi: Falco's father who is briefly seen in a scene in episode 2.

Private Weeber: An ape who works under Andross. Not really a "bad guy", he just happens to be enlisted with them.

Kip Rhyther: A large ape seen at the Sargasso Lounge in episode 1. He asks Fox if he really is "Star Fox", to which Fox - having earlier stated his real name is Fox McCloud - reluctantly admits he is.

The music was created by Matthew Gafford and Stuart Bartlett, while the sound effects were handled by Gafford and Ion Mironov.[1][4]
