The Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (NIWA) is a group of partnered wikis, all of which feature, either partially or mainly, coverage on aspects of the Japanese video game company Nintendo. The wikis in the alliance are all separately operated and maintain unique policies and designs, but are unified through their common trait of being independently owned and hosted, separately from large wiki farms such as Fandom.

Despite the unofficial nature of its component wikis, NIWA's collective 280,000+ pages and large file repository across its 36 members have led them to be used as a source for various gaming publications such as VG247,[2] Kotaku,[3] and Polygon.[4]

History and description[edit]

NIWA originated when the administration of The Legend of Zelda fan wiki Zelda Wiki contacted the staff of Pokémon wiki Bulbapedia to propose an affiliation with each other; it was later decided that a network of wikis providing coverage of Nintendo topics could be formed instead. On February 14, 2010, the two wikis, along with the Super Mario Wiki, which covers the Mario franchise, launched NIWA with three members.[5]

All members of NIWA run on the open-source wiki software MediaWiki.[6] As a collaborative network, NIWA accepts wikis as long as they can meet certain criteria, such as independence from wiki farms or sufficient activeness from its editors.[7] NIWA has no central leadership; all members in the alliance host their wikis independently, and as such have different policies and administration.[8] However, they can support each other via links to other wikis in the group if applicable.

NIWA also hosts an annual event named the "Cross-Wiki Week" involving its members and several affiliates; during the event, users are encouraged to edit wikis they have not edited before for a chance to win gift cards for the Nintendo eShop.[9]

Zelda Wiki ownership[edit]

On March 8, 2017, ownership of Zelda Wiki was purchased by Gamepedia, a wiki hosting service. Zelda Wiki later went under the ownership of Fandom on December 12, 2018, after the company's acquisition of Gamepedia. On October 19, 2022, the wiki eventually forked away from Fandom and into independent hosting;[10] the wiki staff stated the split was due to Fandom's "recent buyouts and questionable staffing decisions" and a desire to "keep the internet free from corporate consolidation".[11][12]

StrategyWiki and Wikibooks[edit]

StrategyWiki, a resource for guides on video games, was founded in 2005;[13][14] in 2007, video game strategy guides were banned from Wikibooks. Due to this ban, most guides formally on Wikibooks were moved to StrategyWiki, as the two wikis had compatible licenses.[15] Following a reversion on this ban on strategy guides in 2021,[16] many guides on StrategyWiki were imported to Wikibooks itself.[17]

Reception[edit]

Both the content and files of the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance's member wikis have been used as sources by various publications. Its members have been listed as sources by IGN,[20] ComicBook,[21] The Daily Telegraph,[22] Polygon,[4] Game Rant,[23] VG247,[2] and The Daily Meal.[24] Several members, such as Inkipedia and StrategyWiki, have been recommended by several publications, including Polygon,[25] Joystiq,[14] and MakeUseOf.[26]

NIWA's large archive of files stored in its wikis have also been utilized by publications and corporations such as GameSpot,[27] Prima Games,[28] and Kotaku,[29] In particular, Bulbapedia has been used as a resource for preserving accurate scans of various Pokémon artwork.[30]

Zelda Wiki was mentioned by Official Nintendo Magazine as "[one of the] fansites out there expanding on some of the theories [on the timeline of The Legend of Zelda series]".[31]

Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia plagiarism[edit]

The English translation of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia, published by Dark Horse Comics, was discovered to have plagiarized the Super Mario Wiki by directly copying unofficial and conjectural names created by the members of the wiki in the book, with no acknowledgement that they originated from the wiki.[32][33]
