Characters[edit]
Shawn Thorton
Legally blind from a young age, Shawn was adopted by his best friend’s father, Bruce. As an adult, he has found a way to reach past his reclusive lifestyle, giving him the ability to find his true calling. Unaware of where his superior abilities of strength, speed, and healing come from, Shawn hid his powers from the world, preferring to mostly keep to himself, only spending time with Bruce and his adoptive brother, Jaxon. One day, Jaxon's fiancee, Julie, was killed. In the wrong place at the wrong time, she was gunned down by crime boss Ivan Vance's right-hand man, Weston Alexander. Bent on revenge, and using neurostimulating lenses, Shawn and Jaxon created the vigilante Grim. Shawn is able to see with the Grim mask on, and he uses his powers to kill criminals while he works his way toward the destruction of Vance and his underground crime ring. Shawn is the first Synth to be created, and was quickly cloned once his makers saw his success. Shawn Thorton is not his given name, but the name Bruce chose for him after rescuing him from Lab 14.
Jaxon Rettig
More outwardly timid than his adoptive brother, Jaxon has struggled with his role in Shawn’s shadow, especially after the death of his fiancee Julie. Using his above average intelligence, he built Grim's suit, but he's not keen on sitting back and playing the role of tech-savvy sidekick instead of taking his rage out on the criminals that ruined his life. Jealousy and envy roil beneath his surface, hidden in the darkness with its deathly grip, struggling to be released upon the world. Jaxon Rettig is not his given name, but the name Bruce chose for him after rescuing him from Lab 14.
Emma McRae
Ivan Vance's top infiltrator, Emma was born into the criminal life. Once her mother was tragically murdered, she was raised by another woman under Vance's watchful eye. When she was old enough, she took over her late mother's role and has been working for the crime boss ever since. Miserable, Emma craves the chance to climb the ranks in Vance’s criminal business. A capable and determined woman, she possesses impressive charm and poise, making her an asset that should not be overlooked.
Isaac Krouse
It is a fatal mistake to be disarmed by his innocent, boyish looks, as Isaac is one of Vance’s most trusted operatives. At odds with his criminal past, and desperately in love with Emma, Isaac hatches a plan in Grim Inception with Officer Grant Halpern, knowing the crooked cop can be his ticket out from Vance's rule. He won't, however, leave without Emma.
Weston Alexander
Hateful of his first name, everyone calls Vance's right-hand man Alex to avoid getting an eye gouged out. Alex embodies a side of ourselves few of us dare to acknowledge. Also born into a life of crime, he is second in command of Redborough’s most powerful criminal organization. A ruthless man, he will stop at nothing to retain his power.
Bruce Rettig
For some, tragic loss can define their lives. Bruce used all the tools given to him throughout his life to develop a deep caring and empathy for the ones he loved that would, unfortunately, forever change his world. He did his best to instill the same feelings in his own son, Jaxon, and his adoptive son Shawn, but life has a way of dragging the past back to haunt them. A powerful Evo with abilities he learns to sculpt and perfect by the end of his story, Bruce was one of the people who worked at Lab 14 before its tragic demise.
Duncan Breckner
One of Lab 14's original scientists, Duncan is a kind and caring man. After the experiments on children at the laboratory began to unsettle him, Duncan found himself wanting an out. Sadly, this came in the form of the accident at Lab 14, which killed many staff and children. Instead of fleeing, he gathers up as many Synth children he can find and rescues them from the horrors. He isn't able to save many, but does get away with Aaron, Mari, Naomi, Lucas, and Peter. Before he does, he lets Bruce take Shawn and Jaxon away to raise on his own. As Jaxon is Bruce's son by blood, Duncan feels this was the best move for the two boys. He hides away in the middle of nowhere in Colorado, training the Synths he was able to save and raising them as his own family.
Henry Haas
Wealthy from blood money, attorney Henry Haas works for Ivan Vance. But when Julie is gunned down and innocent blood spilled, Henry isn’t the only one wanting revenge. He teams up with Cassie, Julie's sister, who works as a caterer for Vance. Henry was responsible for getting Julie into the job she was working when Alex gunned her down, and he feels guilt every single day for it. That is what drives him to change sides, to help Cassie, who has a direct link to the superhero Grim.
Grant Halpern
A high-ranking officer in the RPD, Grant serves as Vance’s point man when the long arm of the law needs to be used for nefarious means. With a newborn son at home and the years of violence escalating, Grant questions what is most important, his family or his loyalty. When Isaac approaches him with a plan to be free of the criminal life they've led, Grant doesn't hesitate to help the younger man, although Isaac's hesitation to leave without Emma frustrates him to no end.
Aaron Ellwood
One of the Synths that escaped the horrors of Lab 14 with Duncan, Aaron's ability is mind reading. Unfortunately, as all Synths weren't perfected before the accident, he is flawed. He is unable to zone into one voice, thus, he hears them all in his head. With Duncan's help in Colorado as he grew up, he learned to quiet the voices, but not eliminate them entirely.
Mari Forrester
Mari, too, is a Synth created in Lab 14. She has the ability to freeze time. Her flaw, however, is that she can only hold it for a short while before it snaps back to the time when she froze it. Those affected by her freeze never know it happened, and are only left with an intense feeling of deja vu. However, if Mari is in contact with someone, directly or through another person, they will not be frozen, and can move about the still world with her until it is released once more. If not touched by her when the world is unfrozen, a person will snap back in time to the point where she froze it, also with no memory and the deja vu feeling. One must be touching Mari if they want to not be frozen or not be reset. Mari was Peter's lover later in life. Friendly yet timid, she becomes standoffish and borderline rude once Peter is killed, which is right before they leave for Redborough to find Shawn and Jaxon.
Charlie Reed
Charlie is a Synth. He'd possibly be the most powerful Synth of them all if he wasn't flawed like the rest of him. His ability is to transfer the powers of a Synth or Evo to himself and use it as his own. Charlie is also able to sense an Evo or Synth from a distance. His flaw, however, is he must be touching them to take their powers. Once the connection is broken, he no longer harnesses their abilities. Charlie was created as a fail safe, in case a Synth got out of control. After the accident at Lab 14, however, he is abandoned. He tries to run after Duncan and the other children but is nearly killed in the process. When he awakes, he's alone and terrified. Having to fend for himself, harboring a deep hatred for Duncan and the Synths, he grows into a psychotic man that enjoys killing and torturing any Evo he can get his hands on.
Cassie Saetren
Julie's older sister, Cassie holds a secret from her close friends Shawn and Jaxon: she works for Ivan Vance. True, it's a low level job, and she's barely on the kingpin's radar, but she needed money for law school. Her friend and mentor, Henry, takes pity on her struggles and connects her with Vance, who lends her the funds she requires with one condition: she takes a job at his catering business and pays him back every single penny in timely payments, and he'll keep it interest free - and she'll keep her life. Desperate to please her strict parents, Cassie agrees, and everything works out fine. Until her sister is gunned down. Feeling responsible, just like Henry, Cassie teams up with Shawn and Jaxon. They create Grim while she uses her inside connections in Vance's business to poison the crime boss two years after Julie's death, which is the start of Grim Ambition.
Marcus Halliday
A long time employee of Vance, Marcus is a middle-aged hit man. He's easy going, but deadly. Easily bribed into jobs he wouldn't do normally with nothing but a promise of extra cash, Marcus knows right from wrong, but often overlooks it.
Nate Birchwood
Alex's personal driver and loyal henchman. He only takes orders from Alex and Vance.
Ivan Vance
The kingpin himself. Ivan Vance is a Russian who has always been around crime, thanks to his father and grandfather. It is the only life he knows, but he enjoys it immensely.
June Berra-Rettig
Bruce's estranged wife, June worked at Lab 14 for a few years with her father before the experiments started. Once she discovered Bruce was an Evo with powers that could help her cause, she used him and his DNA to create the Synths. Bruce was initially on board with everything until he saw how the children, his own included, were being treated, especially by June, who was abusive toward them. Instead of saving June, Bruce helped Duncan during the accident at Lab 14, and took Shawn and Jaxon away from it, bringing them to Redborough, Oregon to raise them as a single father.
Lucas Cupla
One of Shawn's clones, Lucas has the same powers. He is stronger than Shawn, however, due to the training with Duncan in Colorado while Shawn hid his powers and did not use them. Unlike Shawn and Peter, Lucas is more withdrawn and quiet.
Peter Cupla
One of Shawn's clones, Peter has the same powers. He is stronger than Shawn, however, due to the training with Duncan in Colorado while Shawn hid his powers and did not use them. His personality matches Shawn's; he's a laid-back goof who almost always looks at the positive side of things. Unfortunately, Peter is killed in an awful accident while trying to save children on a field trip who got stuck in a cave-in. He is the lover of Mari prior to his death.
Naomi Graham
The final Synth to escape Lab 14 with Duncan, Naomi's power is premonition. She can see the future, but her flaw is that she rarely sees it. Her visions are always true, however, which spurs Duncan to find Shawn, Jaxon, and two people he's never seen before: in her latest premonition, Naomi sees Jaxon slaughtering them all, and she along with the Synths and Duncan are determined to stop it from coming true.
Julie Saetren
Julie wanted nothing more than to live up to her parents' demands and to be as likable as her big sister Cassie. She is a gifted singer, which lands her many jobs as a lounge singer. Unfortunately, once she's tangled up in Vance's crime ring at Henry's urging, her life is quickly ended. Alex planted Julie on stage to keep a meeting with important rivals calm, but his rage got out of hand, and he, Marcus, and many others gunned down the room, with Julie in it.

Grim Ambition[edit]
Aspiring crime boss Emma McRae knows about superheroes. Used for her beauty and enticing demeanor, Emma has been entangled in the underground crime life since she was a little girl. No one has ever left the crime syndicate except in a body bag, and Emma is trapped in her current, low-level role.
A calculated attack by the city’s superhero, Grim, throws Emma’s employer and his well-oiled business into chaos. Eager to impress and finally move up to better jobs – and more respect – Emma doesn’t hesitate to accept the order to infiltrate the vigilante’s life.
Her targets include Shawn Thorton and his adoptive brother, Jaxon Rettig. Legally blind from a young age, Shawn doesn’t seem like much of a threat, but harbors a secret: with the help of neurostimulating lenses, he is Grim, and has been targeting Vance’s syndicate with ruthless ambition.
Unaware of each other’s cold-blooded goals, Shawn and Emma begin to fall for each other. She was born into the criminal life, but through Shawn, begins to question if she’s on the wrong side of the fight. Emma wants to expose Grim’s secret identity and claim his power before her employer decides she’s a liability and fits her for a fancy pair of cement Jimmy Choos. Jaxon, who wants a better role than “tech-savvy sidekick,” longs to take the fighting into his own hands. Shawn must choose between protecting his jealous brother and falling for the appealing Emma, who might be the nemesis that brings the superhero to his knees.
