A Likely Story, also known as Horowitz in Dublin, is an independently-produced 1973 film directed by William Kronick, from a script written by Kronick, Drumcondra-born Michael Judge and James Rush. The film is also known by the title The Dublin Murders.[1][2]

Plot[edit]

New York detective Dan Horowitz flies into Dublin, the home-town of his late wife, to fulfil his last promise to her. While there, he becomes entangled in an investigation into a murderous counterfeiting ring, and runs into some familiar adversaries from the other side of the Atlantic.

Horowitz co-operates with the Garda Technical Bureau (the so-called 'murder squad') to track down the transatlantic gang. Shot primarily around central Dublin, the film climaxes with a sting operation at Leopardstown racecourse.

Background and production[edit]

Despite its pedigree,[original research?] A Likely Story was not commercially released. Cyril and Sinéad Cusack were two of Ireland's most prominent actors, and Al Lettieri had starred in The Godfather just a year earlier. Cinematographer Billy Williams would later win the Academy Award for 1982's Gandhi, and had already shot such features as Women in Love and the opening Iraq-based sequence of The Exorcist.

According to Williams, the film's total obscurity resulted from its being made (with Canadian money) to take advantage of Ireland's generous tax shelter laws for film productions. The film was made without a distributor in place, and consequently only initially seen in the trade.[citation needed] Nonetheless, Williams credits the film with securing him the Director of Photography role on 1975's The Wind and the Lion.[3]
