A Min Tjoa (born 11 December 1952, in Surabaya, Indonesia) is a researcher in the field of information systems engineering. He is active as emeritus Professor for Software Technology at TU WIEN since October 2021, where he has been working as a full professor since October 1994. As executive director, he directs the SBA Research Center.[1], which is an Austrian excellence center in the field of security and privacy (COMET Center). He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in journals and conferences.

Bibliography and scientific career highlights

A Min Tjoa studied computer science in Linz at the Johannes Kepler University and received his doctorate in 1979, studying under Günther Vinek. In 1981, he received his habilitation in the field of Informatics at the University of Vienna where he was appointed to associate professor for Informatics in 1982. In 1988, he was appointed as full professor for Information Systems at the University of Vienna. In 1994, he was assigned as a full professor for Software Technology at TU WIEN. He has been a visiting professor at the National Institute of Informatics (NNI, Japan) since 2011. He is currently also adjunct professor at the Institute Technology Bandung as well.

Next to his scientific work in the area of Data Science, Semantic Web, Security and Privacy, his research interests include the use of research findings for humanity and sustainability, especially in the field of support for people with special needs, education of marginalized populations and digital agriculture.

In the periods 2015-2018 and 2019-2021, he served as the Vice-Chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UN-CSTD)[2]. For the period 2018 to 2019 he was the Chairperson of UN-CSTD[3].

One of his main interests is the application of advanced IT-methods for people with special needs.

Together with his colleague Roland Wagner, he initiated one of the most important conferences in the field already in 1989, ICCHP. In 2020, he was one of the keynote speakers at this conference[4]. Together with Roland Wagner, he initiated the International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA)[5].

Honors, awards, and invited positions

  • In 2003, he became the recipient of the Roland Wagner Award on Computers Helping People with Special Needs.[6]
  • Co-initiator of the Science Award Inclusion through Science and Technology (WINTEC-AWARD) of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Social Affairs and Member of its jury since its implementation[7].
  • Project coordinator of the EU-project “Head in the Clouds” focused on the educational needs of Roma-minority children in Kosovo, Slovakia and Romania which has been selected as a "success story" by the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission in 2020[8][9][10].
  • President of the Austrian Computer Society[11] in the period 1999-2003[12] and member of the Executive Board of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) from 2013-2019[13].
  • Active as one of the founding professors of the ASEA-UNINET (ASEAN European Academic University Network) at its 1st Meeting in Ho Chi Minh City in December 1994. He was the president of ASEA-UNINET in the period 2013-2014, and is currently its European Coordinator for Technology, Innovation and Sustainability Projects[14].
  • In 2011, he received the honorary doctoral degree from the Czech Technical University in Prague and the honorary professor degree of the Huế University (Vietnam).
  • In the period of 2012-2016, he was a member of the Council of Doctoral Studies in Mathematics, Informatics and Telecommunication (Conseil de l’ Ecole Doctorate Mathématique, Informatique et Telecommunications de Toulouse)[15] which covers all universities in the Toulouse area.
  • From 2017 to 2020, he served as the Scientific Chief Officer of Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH) in Upper Austria.[16]
  • Member of the Board (Senate) of the Christian Doppler Foundation for the establishment of high-technology transfer labs in Austria.
  • Current president of the Austrian-Indonesian Society (AIS)[17].
  • Current editor-in-chief of Springer’s Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems[18].
