"A Whole New Whirled" is the series premiere of the American superhero television series Peacemaker, a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. The episode was written and directed by the series creator James Gunn. It originally aired on HBO Max on January 13, 2022.

The series follows Christopher Smith / Peacemaker as he returns home and is forced to work with A.R.G.U.S. agents on a classified operation known as "Project Butterfly". Smith also grapples with his personal demons and reconnects with his estranged father.

The series premiere received positive reviews from critics, who highlighted its humor, writing, and performances, particularly John Cena.

Plot[edit]

Five months after the events in Corto Maltese, Christopher Smith / Peacemaker has recovered from his injuries. He is discharged from the hospital and confirms with janitor Jamil that no one is looking for him. As he leaves, a nurse secretly reports his exit to "Mr. Murn".

Peacemaker returns to his trailer home but cannot pay for the taxi ride, so he gives up his helmet. He finds many voicemails from someone called "Vigilante". He is then confronted by a team led by Clemson Murn, including newcomer Leota Adebayo, and A.R.G.U.S. agents Emilia Harcourt and John Economos. They offer him a choice: return to Belle Reve prison or join "Project Butterfly" to kill "Butterflies". Peacemaker reluctantly accepts the mission.

Peacemaker visits his father, Auggie, to retrieve his pet bald eagle, Eagly, and get a new helmet. Auggie mocks him but gives him the helmet. Peacemaker has dinner with his team, where Murn gives him a dossier on a U.S. Senator target. Adrian Chase recognizes Peacemaker but is dismissed.

After dinner, Peacemaker expresses distrust towards Murn to Adebayo. He follows Harcourt to a bar, where she fends off a patron. Peacemaker's proposition for sex is rejected by Harcourt. Meanwhile, Adebayo talks to her mother, Waller, about secret plans.

Peacemaker interacts with Annie Sturphausen at the bar and they have sex at her apartment. She attacks him, displaying superhuman strength. Peacemaker escapes by jumping from the window and uses his helmet's sonic boom to destroy Sturphausen, attracting the police.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

In September 2020, HBO Max announced a series focusing on Christopher Smith / Peacemaker, played by John Cena in The Suicide Squad.[1] James Gunn would serve as showrunner and direct many episodes. Gunn viewed the series as an opportunity to explore current world issues through the lens of Peacemaker. He used Better Call Saul, Spartacus, the V series, and the 1990 film Captain America as influences.[2]

In July 2021, the episode's title was revealed as "A Whole New Whirled".[3]

Casting[edit]

John Cena serves as co-executive producer and main lead actor in the series.

John Cena reprises his role as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker.[1] Other returning actors include Steve Agee as John Economos and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt.[4][5]

Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Chris Conrad, and Chukwudi Iwuji were announced as series regulars.[6][7][8] In May 2021, Chris Conrad was replaced by Freddie Stroma.[9]

Viola Davis makes an uncredited cameo as Amanda Waller.[10]

Critical reception[edit]

"A Whole New Whirled" received positive reviews from critics. Samantha Nelson of IGN gave the three-episode premiere an 8 out of 10 rating and praised its humor and biting commentary on the superhero genre.[11]

Jarrod Jones of The A.V. Club gave the premiere an "A-" grade, highlighting the series' unique blend of vulgarity, violence, and heart.[12]
