"Aftermath" is the premiere episode of the American animated television series Star Wars: The Bad Batch, based on the Bad Batch characters introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. "Aftermath" was directed by Steward Lee, Saul Ruiz, and Nathaniel Villanueva and written by Jennifer Corbett and Dave Filoni.
It released on Disney+ on May 4, 2021 as a Star Wars Day Special.
Plot[edit]
While assisting Jedi Knights Depa Billaba and Caleb Dume on Kaller, Clone Captain Grey receives Order 66 from Emperor Palpatine. The Bad Batch overhears the order, but except for Crosshair, they feel no compulsion to execute it, and Hunter lets Caleb escape.
Back on Kamino, the Bad Batch encounter Omega, an adolscent female clone who is genetically as unorthodox as they are. Admiral Tarkin later arrives to evaluate whether the clone army is of any more use to the newly formed Empire, and after receiving Crosshair's report on Kaller, he sends the Bad Batch to Onderon to eliminate a group of alleged insurgents and thus test their loyalties.
When the "insurgents" are revealed as fugitives from the Empire led by Saw Gerrera, the Bad Batch decides to go rogue, but are captured when returning to Kamino for Omega. Crosshair, who is still under the influence of his inhibitor chip, is reprogrammed by Tarkin to turn against his squadmates, and the Bad Batch and Omega are forced to flee Kamino without him.
Production[edit]
Development[edit]
Disney+ officially ordered a new series from Lucasfilm Animation in July 2020 titled Star Wars: The Bad Batch, a spin-off from the final season of The Clone Wars following the Bad Batch clones in the aftermath of the Clone War. The announcement described the series as Dave Filoni's vision, and he serves as executive producer alongside Lucasfilm's Athena Portillo, supervising director Brad Rau, and head writer Jennifer Corbett, with Lucasfilm's Carrie Beck and Josh Rimes as co-executive producer and producer, respectively.[1] Filoni described the series as "very much in the vein" of The Clone Wars and said it would stay true to Lucas's vision for that series of telling epic, exciting adventure stories.[2]
The first episode, titled "Aftermath," was written by Jennifer Corbett and Dave Filoni and directed by Steward Lee, Saul Ruiz, and Nathaniel Villanueva. A first look of the episode was released on May 3, 2021.[3]
Casting[edit]
The first trailer for the series was released in December 2020, and confirmed that Dee Bradley Baker would return from The Clone Wars as the voice of all the clone troopers in the series, including the members of the Bad Batch and Captain Rex. A day before the episode's premiere, Michelle Ang was announced to be voicing Omega.[4] In addition, Andrew Kishino and Stephen Stanton were cast as Saw Gerrera and Admiral Tarkin.[5][6]
Music[edit]
Kevin Kiner was confirmed to be scoring the series in January 2021, after previously scoring The Clone Wars and Rebels. He wrote the Bad Batch Theme for the final season of The Clone Wars.
Release[edit]
"Aftermath" was released on Disney+ on May 4, 2021.[7]
Critical response[edit]
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 93% approval rating with an average score of 7.22/10 based on 29 reviews. The site's critical consensus reads: "With stunning animation and plenty of action, "Aftermath" successfully sets the stage for a thrilling new saga—though casual fans may find themselves lost in a sea of references."
A review of the episode by Multiversity Comics praised the episode setting up the plot to come, saying "It’s a solid hook because even for fans of Star Wars in general and The Clone Wars in particular, it was kind of hard to gauge what this show would actually be about, but this short film of a premiere gives us everything we need to set up the coming show."[8] On the betrayal of the Bad Batch by Crosshair, Caroline Cao of /Film said, "There’s a juicy grappling here that the premiere could have fleshed out if it had granted time to know the Bad Batch’s pre-Order 66 normalcy. Clone Wars illustrated that the clones’ brain chip can alter original personalities and implant rage toward Jedi and perceived traitors in even loyal clones like Rex."[9]
Jesse Schdeen of IGN gave the premiere episode an 8 out of 10 rating, stating that the series is "a worthy successor to The Clone Wars, so much so that it could easily be rebranded as an eighth season" and that "it uses a loose end from that show to build a brand new story about the plight of clones after the war's end, and it's one that immediately resonates". He also added that the show "captures a lot of what made The Clone Wars so great (including the slick animation style and the vocal talents of Baker), but it doesn't entirely escape that show's flaws, either".[10]
