Aaron Ironside is a New Zealand radio broadcaster who has worked for Radio Hauraki and Rhema Media and from 1996–1998 was the weekday breakfast anchor on Radio Hauraki with "The Morning Pirates". He was the spokesperson for the "Say Nope to Dope" campaign opposing the legalisation of cannabis in New Zealand,[1][2] as proposed in the 2020 New Zealand cannabis referendum during the 2020 New Zealand general election. [3]

Radio career[edit]

While studying psychology at the University of Auckland,[4] Ironside began working in radio as the anchor of "The Morning Pirates" on Radio Hauraki,[5] alongside co-hosts Leah Panapa and Dean Lonergan.

In 1999, Ironside joined Rhema Media where he hosted radio shows on Christian radio networks Rhema,[6] Life FM, and Star.

Politics[edit]

In June 2020, Ironside was announced as the spokesperson of the "Say Nope to Dope" campaign,[3] [7]representing Smart Approaches to Marijuana NZ [8], a collective of several organizations opposed to the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill. In October 2020 there was a 50.7% vote against the 2020 New Zealand cannabis referendum.[9]

From April 2021 to December 2022, with an additional episode in February 2022, Ironside hosted a weekly podcast called "Active Intelligence", with discussions of several social issues from a centre-right perspective. [10]
