Aaron Tanner is an American graphic designer, author, and musician whose work primarily centers around the visual histories of alternative rock bands.[1]

Career[edit]

Tanner started Melodic Virtue, originally a graphic design firm, in 2004. Most notably, Tanner has designed album covers and other merchandise for the American alternative rock band Ween for over fifteen years.[2] In January 2017, Tanner changed the focus of Melodic Virtue to become a publishing house for his visual history coffee table books[3] and has since released books on the Butthole Surfers,[4] The Residents,[5] Ministry,[6] Face to Face,[7] and Lil Bub.[8]

Accolades[edit]

Butthole Surfers: What Does Regret Mean? was named LA Weekly’s Book of the Month in 2019.[9]

Music career[edit]

Tanner formed Stationary Odyssey with Brett Siler in 2002. The group produced 3 full-length albums, 5 EPs, and 2 singles before disbanding in 2012. Their last release was a split 7" single with Joey Santiago and David Lovering of the Pixies.[10] Since then, Tanner has founded the noise rock group Off-Ox[11] and a recording project with Rob Crow (Pinback) and Spencer Seim (Hella) called Byre.[12]
