) is the Tamil-language song composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who also performed the track with Vishal Dadlani, and lyrics written by Yugabharathi. The song was featured in the soundtrack of the 2014 action drama film Kaththi, directed by AR Murugadoss.[1] The track was choreographed by Vishnu Deva and featured the lead actors Vijay and Samantha.[2] It was released along with the soundtrack album on 24 September 2014.[3]

Background[edit]

The track was composed during late-April 2014, which is the fifth track composed for the album.[4] Touted to be a "romantic number", Anirudh received praise from the production team for the tune he came up for the track.[5] By late-May 2014, Anirudh went to Mumbai for the final recording, and had roped in Bollywood music director Vishal Dadlani to croon the track.[6][7] The song marked Vishal and Anirudh's second collaboration after "Oh Penne" from Vanakkam Chennai (2013), which marked the latter's debut in playback singing in Tamil film music.[6]

Anirudh recalled in 2018, that while composing the romantic track, he was impressed by the 'hook line' of the track, transitioning from a melodious to high energy-packed composition. As he liked the tune phrase, he decided to convert it as the main theme for the film, which became "The Sword of Destiny".[8]

Critical response[edit]

Writing for The Indian Express, Durgesh Haridas claimed the song has the potential to be a "long term chart topper" after "Selfie Pulla" and called it as a "trademark Anirudh number".[9] Writing for the same publication, Manoj Kumar R. called "Aathi" as a "love anthem for the youth".[10] K. Siddharth of Sify called "Aathi" as the "best track from the album" and said "Vishal Dadlani’s Tamil diction is a bit off but the tune compensates for that with its instant catchiness. The guitar work that comes during the second interval is Deep Purple-ish and deserves applause.  The ‘Un Azhagil En Idhayam’ hook is certainly the high point of the song. Anirudh excels in his attempt at soft rock!"[11]

Behindwoods gave a verdict "The composer proves yet again that he is blessed with the ability to identify the pulling factor of a simple tune and use it to the fullest".[12] Subramanian Harikumar, writing for BollywoodLife.com stated it as a "foot tapping romantic song" and further stated that "Vishal Dadlani's edgy voice gives the song a very unique peppy feel". Calling about the picturisation of the track, Harikumar stated it as "worth mentioning" as "the leads romance in long grass fields with a solitary wind mill in the back drop" in the promo.[2]
