Abantu Book Festival

The Abantu Festival is an annual literary event aimed at Black writers and readers "to celebrate the rich and diverse African literary heritage".[1] The Festival was first held in Soweto, South Africa in 2016.
The Abantu Book Festival was created to counter the claim that Black South Africans do not read or buy books.[2]The Festival was founded as a radical alternative to the ways in which the publishing industry and literary culture in South Africa have marginalized Blackness and Black reading audiences.[3] Thando Mgqolozana, a South African novelist, is the founder of the Festival. In 2015, Mgqolozana announced his exit from the South African literary festival scene. “I’m quitting what I call the white literary system in South Africa,” he said at the Franschhoek Literary Festival to a predominantly white audience. “You can just turn around and look at yourselves – it looks very abnormal. In this country, it should never be like this”.[4]
