Abby Deschene (born May 10, 2001) is a Canadian curler from Timmins, Ontario. Deschene was born in Sudbury, Ontario, daughter of Jan and Paul Deschene. Deschene currently skips a team curling out of Acton, Ontario.
Junior career[edit]
Deschene found success in high school curling competing with the Lockerby Composite School Vikings. In her debut during the 2016-17 season, the team of Kira Brunton, Sydnie Stinson, Jessica Leonard and Abby Deschene skipped by Kira Brunton won the 2017 SDSSAA Curling Championship[1] , the 2017 NOSSA Curling Championship [2] and fell short in the 2017 OFSAA Curling Championship final earning them a silver medal. The following year their skip would graduate and the team welcomed Elizabeth Huska with Sydnie Stinson assuming skipping duties. The with Deschene playing second, the Lockerby Vikings won the 2018 SDSSAA Curling Championship, the 2018 NOSSA Curling Championship and upset the hometown team in the final of the 2018 OFSAA Curling Championship [3] earning them a gold medal. The team was inducted into the Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame as the High School Team of the Year in 2018.
In U-18 curling, Deschene debuted at the 2017 Northern Ontario U-18 provincial championship with teammates Bella Croisier, Lauren Rajala, Piper Croisier and Elizabeth Huska. The team emerged through round robin as the top seed earning the bye to the final before falling short to her high school curling teammates playing with Team Brunton. In the 2017-18 season, Deschene joined Sydnie Stinson, Kate Sherry and Jessica Leonard at the lead position in an attempt to help defend their title. The team fell short to Team Croisier in the final.[4]
Deschene's next final was in the 2019-20 season when she skipped a team including Alyssa McVittie, Zoe Valliere and Emily Brock to the final of the 2020 Best Western U21 Provincial Championship. The championship was rounded of three teams (Brunton, Croisier and Deschene). Team Deschene earned the bye to the final after the round robin play and fell to Team Brunton who earned the birth to represent Northern Ontario at the 2020 New Holland Canadian Junior Championship.[5]
Women's career[edit]
Deschene's debut season representing the Laurentian Voyageurs was at the 2022 OUA Curling Championship where she skipped the team to a quarterfinal finish. The team finished the round robin with a perfect record at 4-0. The team then fell in a tight quarterfinal battle to the Carleton Ravens. Deschene was recognized for her high level of play earning the 1st Team All-Star award as a skip.[6]
During the 2022-23 season, Deschene played second representing Laurentian University at the 2023 U Sports/Curling Canada University Curling Championships earning a bronze medal with the team skipped by Bella Croisier. The Laurentian Voyageurs earned the top seed through round robin play with a 6-1 record before losing the semi-final match up to the Dalhousie Tigers. The team would finish the tournament with the fewest losses overall. Deschene was recognized as Canadian 2nd Team All-Star for her level of play throughout the week.[7][8] The team also earned a silver medal at the 2023 OUA Championships in Oshawa, Ontario.
Mixed Doubles career[edit]
Deschene's Northern Ontario Mixed Doubles debut came in the 2023 championship vying for a berth to the 2023 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in Sudbury, Ontario. She paired up with Mike Assad in the triple knockout format event. The pair entered the final with a 7-2 record but finished 2nd dropping the final match to Tracy Fleury and Jacob Horgan of Sudbury[9]. The pair opened with a 9-7 loss to Bonin-Ducharme/Smith before winning three straight against MacLeod/Wilson (8-3), Hornets (8-6), Westlund/Stewart (9-6) before dropping a second game to Chandler/Chandler (8-6). The team then won 4 straight against Bowman/Bowman (8-2), Chandler/Chandler (10-9), Gates/Bonot (8-3) and Gates/Langlois (7-1) on their road to the final. [10]
