Abdalhadi Alijla (Arabic: عبد الهادي العجلة) is a Palestinian-Swedish social and political scientist and academic researcher. His work focuses on governance, divided societies, democracy, and Middle East politics. He has held research and leadership roles in international academic institutions and has published scholarly and public-facing works on conflict, social cohesion, and political institutions.

Early life and education

Alijla was born in the Gaza Strip. He initially studied engineering before shifting to political science. He earned a master's degree in Public Policy and Governance from Zeppelin University in Germany and completed his doctoral studies in political science at the University of Milan (Statale) in Italy.

Career

Alijla has worked as a researcher and policy analyst with international and regional organizations. His professional experience includes collaboration with Transparency International, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the European Union Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis (Madad Fund), and United Nations Volunteers.

He has served as an associate researcher and regional manager for Gulf countries at the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute at the University of Gothenburg. He has also held visiting and associate research positions at the Orient Institute in Beirut and the Post-Conflict Research Center in Sarajevo.

Alijla is a co-founder of the Palestine Young Academy, established in 2020, and has served as co-leader of the Global Migration and Human Rights working group at the Global Young Academy.

Publications

Alijla is the author of Trust in Divided Societies: State, Institutions and Governance in Lebanon, Syria and Palestine, published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2020. He has also co-edited volumes on governance and conflict in the Middle East.

His commentary and analysis have appeared in outlets including openDemocracy, The Cairo Review of Global Affairs, Jadaliyya, Qantara, Mondoweiss, and HuffPost.

Awards and recognition

In 2021, Alijla received the Global South Award from the International Political Science Association for his contributions to political science research.
