Abdeslam El Abidi (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; January 12, 1940 – September 16, 1988), also known by his military nickname Alpha Bravo, was a Moroccan colonel who served in the Royal Moroccan Army. He was widely known for his prominent field commands during the Western Sahara War.

Biography

El Abidi was born in Tetouan in 1940 during the Spanish protectorate in Morocco. He entered military service on October 1, 1959.

In October 1981, following the death of Commander Ali Bezzaa at the Battle of Guelta Zemmour, Colonel El Abidi assumed command of the 3rd Motorized Infantry Regiment (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist. – 3rd RIM). The elite unit had originally been established in Guercif in 1975 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Ouchettou.[1]

Death

On September 16, 1988, while leading his forces during the Battle of Oum Dreyga, El Abidi's vehicle came under heavy fire, resulting in his capture by the Polisario Front. Regarded as a prominent frontline figure within the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces,[2] he succumbed to severe wounds and fractures shortly after his capture before reaching Tindouf.[3][4]
