Abdul Monem Limited (AML) is one of the largest industrial conglomerates with 12 business concerns in Bangladesh.[1][3] The industries under this conglomerate include beverages, sugar refinery, consumer products, real estate, construction materials amongst others.[3]

AML was established by Abdul Monem in 1956.[4] After his death his sons are taking the key decisions of this group.[1] A. S. M. Mainuddin Monem is the Managing Director of Abdul Monem Limited.[5] A. S. M. Mohiuddin Monem is the Deputy Managing Director of Abdul Monem Limited.[6]

History[edit]

Abdul Monem established the company in 1956 as AML Construction Unit.[7][8]

In 1982, Abdul Monem Limited (AML) started bottling for Coca-Cola in Bangladesh after purchasing the plant from K. Rahman & Company.[8] Later the company established a bottling plant in Cumilla with 450 bottles per minute capacity[8] and expands its business in Food & Beverage Market.[9] The group constructed portions of the Khulna-Mongla Highway in 1984.[10]

The group constructed the Jamuna Bridge, a major infrastructure project of Bangladesh in 1990s.[11]

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated Mawna flyover on Dhaka Mymensingh highway constructed by Abdul Monem Limited in April 2015.[12]

In 2017, AML got a license to set up a private economic zone, Abdul Monem Economic Zone (AMEZ) under BEZA in 216 acres of land at Gazaria Upazila, Munshiganj.[13] They also invested in Bangbandhu Industrial City in 2022.[14] In 2018, a study found that Igloo and other business units from AML were responsible for 20% of single-use plastic pollution in Bangladesh.[15]

The founder and chairman of the group, Abdul Monem, died at the Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka in June 2020.[7]

In 2021, they were awarded the $2 billion contract to expand a section of the Elenga-Rangpur highway.[16][17] The group was involved in the construction of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Osmani International Airport, Dhaka Metro Rail,[18] and Kalna Bridge.[19] The company also constructed Kalshi Flyover, Cox's Bazar International Airport Tarmac Project, Karnaphuli Tunnel Project, and Jalsiri Abasan Project.[5] AML had 38% of the ice cream market in Bangladesh as of 2021 through its subsidiary Igloo.[20]

In 2022, Coca-Cola and AML provided water supplies to victims of the 2022 India–Bangladesh floods.[21]

AML supported construction of the 6.15 kilometer-long Padma Bridge which opened in 2022.[22][23] The Padma Bridge is a major infrastructure development which services a metro population of greater than 30 million people and is expected to increase the country's GDP by over 1%.[24][25]

In April 2023, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi awarded ServicEngine Limited, subsidiary of Abdul Monem Limited, the national export trophy.[26] It had won the award each year for the last eight years.[26]
