Abdul Rozali-Wathooth (born 4 October 1949) is a retired pioneering Malaysian cardiothoracic surgeon. He was part of the surgical teams that performed two coronary artery bypass graft surgeries on former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, firstly in 1989 and subsequently in 2007.[1] [2] [3]
Early life and education
Dr. Abdul Rozali Wathooth graduated with an MBBS (Hons) from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, in 1974. He continued his medical training in Australia, completing his specialist training and earning a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 1982. During his training, he was attached to teaching hospitals at the University of Tasmania (Royal Hobart Hospital) and the University of Sydney (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children) from 1976 to 1981.[4]
Career
Upon returning to Malaysia, Dr. Rozali-Wathooth played a pivotal role in establishing cardiothoracic surgery as a specialty. He was a member of the "Dream Team," a group of eight Malaysian healthcare professionals who were sent to Sydney, Australia, in 1981 to undergo intensive training in open-heart surgery. Their mission was to return and establish the country's first dedicated open-heart surgical program. From 1982 to 1985, he served as the founding Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the General Hospital in Kuala Lumpur (now known as Kuala Lumpur Hospital). His work there laid the groundwork for the modern cardiac care facilities that followed in the country.[5]
On October 22, 1982, just over six months after the program commenced, his team successfully performed Malaysia's first coronary artery bypass surgery—a quintuple bypass on a 39-year-old patient. This procedure is now the most common open-heart surgical procedure performed in the country. [5]
Following his tenure in the public sector, he moved into private practice in 1985, becoming a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Sime Darby Medical Centre (formerly known as Subang Jaya Medical Centre) and Ara Damansara Medical Centre. He retired from clinical practice on January 1, 2021. [4]
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Rozali-Wathooth is also involved in the academic and administrative aspects of medicine. He served as the Chairman of IJN Holdings and also served as the Chairman of Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) College.[6] His appointment at IJN College was aimed at guiding the institution in producing more healthcare professionals in cardiovascular and thoracic sciences. He was also a member of the Board of Studies for the UiTM-IJN Cardiothoracic Surgery program, which aims to train the next generation of specialists locally. [7]

Dr. Rozali-Wathooth is regarded as a pioneer of cardiothoracic surgery in Malaysia. He has been a mentor to many of Malaysia's leading cardiac surgeons, including Dr. Yahya Awang, who credits Dr. Rozali with encouraging him to pursue a career in cardiac surgery.[8] He is known for his dedication and inquisitive mind, often taking several hours for a clinical examination to ensure the best possible outcome for his patients. His contributions have been instrumental in the development of a resilient and world-renowned healthcare system in Malaysia.
