Johan Rozali-Wathooth is a Malaysian impact investor and non-profit activist. He is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bintang Capital Partners, a Southeast Asian impact investing firm headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.[1] He is widely cited as a pioneer within the Southeast Asian impact investing space, having led the first private equity firm in the region to achieve B Corp certification.[2]
Early life and education
Johan completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), which he attended as a Chevening Scholar.[3]
He later qualified as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) in 2004 (later upgraded to Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) in 2016) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and he earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2007.[3]
Career
Early Career
Prior to founding Bintang, Johan held several roles in global and regional financial institutions. He started his career at Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young within the corporate restructuring industry.[4] In 2004 he entered the alternative investment industry when he joined Babson Capital Management's London office.
In 2010, Johan returned to Malaysia to join the investment banking division of HSBC Malaysia[5], later moving to the Affin Banking Group where he played a key role in the 2014 acquisition and integration of Hwang-DBS Berhad into Affin Hwang Capital.[4]
He held several senior leadership roles within Affin Hwang Capital before being appointed Deputy Managing Director of Affin Hwang Asset Management (now AHAM Capital) in 2016.[5]
Johan played a key role in the subsequent divestment of AHAM Capital by the Affin Banking Group to global private equity firm CVC Capital Partners in January 2022.[6]
Bintang Capital Partners
In 2018, Johan established Bintang Capital Partners as an impact-focused private equity firm. Bintang became the first private equity firm in Southeast Asia to achieve B Corp certification in May 2023[2] and Johan's leadership has focused on "investing in innovation and impact", a strategy that mandates social or environmental outcomes alongside financial returns[1]:
- B Corp Certification: In 2022, Johan directed the firm's transition to becoming a Certified B Corporation. This was a significant milestone for the Southeast Asian private equity landscape, as it marked the first time an investment firm met these specific global standards for transparency and social accountability.[7] Bintang also became the first Southeast Asian investment firm that requires its portfolio companies to obtain B Corp certification as part of its investment mandate[8] and several of its portfolio companies have achieved this milestone including Involve Asia (September 2024)[9], Care Concierge (November 2024)[10] and Bitsmedia (July 2025)[11]
- Thematic Investing: He oversaw the launch of the Bintang Semiconductor Impact Fund, which notably utilizes a "Gender Lens" framework and targets high-growth sectors such as semiconductors and advanced manufacturing.[12]
Recognition and Influence
Johan’s work in impact investing has been featured in several academic and professional case studies, notably the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) study titled "Betting Big on Purpose".[1]
He is a frequent commentator on regional private equity trends and has been featured in The Edge Malaysia[8], Mergermarket (ION Analytics)[13][14], and the Financial Times[15] forums regarding the transition toward a "circular economy" and social impact in emerging markets.
Under Johan's leadership, Bintang Capital Partners has received international recognition and acclaim for its impact investing work:
- 2023: Won Global SME of the Year at the Environmental Finance Sustainable Company Awards.[16] Won the Innovative Investment Award at the ASEAN Business Awards 2023.[17]
- 2024: First firm from Asia to win the Private Markets category at the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Awards.[18] Won the Innovative Financing for Gender Equality prize at the 2024 Malaysian UN Women Asia and the Pacific Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Awards.[19]
- 2025: First Malaysian firm to win the Responsible Investment Award at the 25th Asian Venture Capital Journal (AVCJ) Private Equity & Venture Capital Awards for the firm's investment in Care Concierge.[20]
Non Profit Work
Johan was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation[21] (YTAR) by the Minister of Education, Malaysia in 2018[22]. YTAR has helped over 9,000 youth across Malaysia through the provision of higher education financial assistance and programmes since its establishment in 1966.[23]
He was also appointed to the Board of Trustees of Impact Integrated[24] by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Malaysia in 2023[25]. Impact Integrated is a strategic agency under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia to equip young Malaysians to take part in catalysing impact for social development.[26]
Johan is the Honorary Treasurer and an Executive Committee member of the Malaysian Leprosy Relief Association (MALRA)[27], a non-governmental charity formed in 1959 to provide financial relief and other support to leprosy patients, ex-patients and their families.[28]
