Abdullah Abdul Bari ( 1924 - 1996 ), was an Egyptian journalist, served as the former chairman of the Board of Directors of the Al-Ahram Foundation.[1][2][3][4]

Birth and childhood[edit]

Abdullah Abdul Bari, was born on  April 25, 1924, in the village of "Alaghdeh" center of Minya in Sharqia Governorate, Egypt. He was the oldest son in his family and at the age of four he began to memorize the Quran. By the time he was six years old he enrolled in compulsory school.

When he was young, he moved with his uncle from their village to Cairo to complete his education in schools at Cairo. Abdullah started to educate at a school next to Bab al-Louq district and then began moving from one school to another. He continued his moves with his uncle to the governorates of Sohag and Alexandria and then to Arish and Zagazig. When he was in secondary school, his father died, and his uncle, Al-Bakbashi Abdul al-Wahhab Abdul Bari was martyred during the Second World War. After his uncle's funeral, Abdullah returned to his village in the Sharqia Governorate and continued his education with his brothers.

Academic life[edit]

After finishing high school, he joined the College of Science and Medicine, but since he had no interest, he discontinued his studies in science and medicine and decided to study at the College of Arts and Sciences.

He was a member of the acting team and a member of the Shakespeare theater team at the university, as well as a member of the Gramaphone Society headed by Dr. Louis Awad. He represented as the president of the English Literature Association in Cairo University and was also a member of the Students' union.

In 1947, Abdullah Abdul Bari graduated from the English Language Department at Cairo University. He loved the Arabic language by memorizing the Quran. He continued his studies in language at Cairo University since that time, the university was leaded by Arabic language geniuses, such as Shawqi Daif, Suhayr al-Qalamawi, and Abdul Latif Hamza. Abdullah also learned French, Italian, and some Spanish at the university.

Professional life[edit]

Abdullah worked as a translator for Sawt al-Umma and al-Balagh newspapers, and was led to the idea of working as a broadcaster for the Egyptian radio since he had a close friendship with the senior media professionals and broadcasters.

After graduating Arabic language, due to his reliability he was chosen to be the editor of the news department of the Egyptian radio, but Abdullah refused this job. Abdullah and some of his friends joined the Egypt Air company but after a while he resigned due to some troubles he had with the job. He decided to work in the Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper as the advertising editor.

Abdullah Abdul Bari began his journalistic career as an editor for flight affairs in Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper, and his first press interview was with the Austrian Chancellor in Vienna, and he was promoted in the advertising company until he became the head of the entire Arab department specialized in advertisements for Al-Masry newspaper. After three years, he became the director of creation and authorized agent for the company.

Arrest[edit]

In March 1954, Al-Masry newspaper was banned, and the Egyptian Advertising Company was closed. Abdullah joined Akhbar Al-Youm and in 1962 he was arrested on charges of working for Al-Masry newspaper. He spent a year in prison.

Joining Al-Ahram[edit]

After his release from prison, he left work in Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper and joined Al-Ahram newspaper in 1965. In 1968 he was elected as a member of Al-Ahram's board of directors. In 1976, he became the General Director of Al-Ahram Foundation and later was chosen as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Ahram. He assumed the position of chairman of the Board of Directors of Mayo Publishing House in addition to his presidency of the Al-Ahram Board of Directors.
