Aber-clam Lincoln (sometimes spelled Abra-clam Lincoln) is an individual quahog clam that was found on a beach in Alligator Point in Florida.[1] Unlike most quahogs (which are about 3 inches long, and weigh half a pound), it is 6 inches long, and weighs 2.6 pounds.[2] Because its estimated birth year is 1809 (the same year that former United States president Abraham Lincoln was born) and it was discovered on United States President's Day weekend, its discovery has generated significant attention.
While collecting shellfish on 18 February 2023, Blaine Parker discovered the clam buried in the sand. Parker was originally planning to use the clam as food, but decided to keep it instead. After being analysed by scientists and receiving significant attention, the clam was released back into the Gulf of Mexico from Alligator Point, Florida. The Gulf Specimen Marine Lab confirmed from the clam's ridges that it was 214 years old, as of February 2023.[3]
Quahogs' natural environment is in the Atlantic Ocean, stretching from the tip of Iceland to North Carolina. This makes it unique that Aber-clam was able to live so long in the Gulf of Mexico, outside its natural environment. The clam was born mostly before the Industrial Revolution's major effects on climate change, and has thus lived through most of modern climate change.
Onomatology
Due to the clam's date of birth and date of discovery both coincidentally being related to United States presidents, Parker named it "Aber-clam Lincoln" after Abraham Lincoln.
