Abhijit Deonath was born in India but currently lives in Canberra, Australia.[1][2] A postgraduate from the Indian School of Mines, he has held management positions in diverse sectors such as mining, manufacturing, finance and public service. A creative and resourceful entrepreneur, Abhijit is a literature, language, music and cinema practitioner. He is noted for producing and directing a recent Hindi feature Salt Bridge (Film).[3][4][5] He has also composed songs for the film which have been shortlisted for Oscar nominations.[6][7]
Personal life and early career[edit]
Youngest among four siblings, Abhijit spent his early days in Ballarpur in Maharashtra. His father Damodar Debnath was an employee with the Indian Railways and mother Shantilata Debnath a housewife. Since his early years, he was extremely passionate about Hindi literature and Hindi film music. After school hours, he would regularly visit in the Railways sponsored local library and borrow books on Hindi literature. He had some publications to his credit in newspapers while he was still a student. He also made sure he never missed radio programs on Radio Ceylon and Vividh Bharti which played Hindi film songs. He did compose a few songs at an early age but kept them to himself. He had a brief stint of Indian classical music training and practiced Rabindra Sangeet at home.
After the untimely death of his father, the family moved to Nagpur where Abhijit completed his graduation. He had an outstanding academic career thereafter finishing post-graduation from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. An avid admirer of nature, he took his early work career as a geologist in eastern India as an opportunity to travel and get close to Mother Earth. He treasures his experiences of fieldwork as guide to cultures of various regions of India which he thinks helps him with storytelling.
Abhijit lives with his wife Alakananda and two children. Besides his debut film Salt Bridge,[8] he is also spending some time researching for his second feature.
