Abhijnan Roychowdhury [1] (born 18 April 1970) is a Bengali author from India. He is known for his works in science fiction and creating the popular character Anilikha(Bengali: অনিলিখা). He is also one of the most recognized Bengali writers in the children and young adults segment. He won Dinesh Chandra Smriti Puraskar for his contribution to Bengali Literature in 2018.

Personal Life[edit]

Abhijnan Roychowdhury was born in Kolkata, in 1970 and studied in Hindu School in Kolkata. He subsequently studied Electrical Engineering in the Jadavpur University and in IIM Calcutta. His first story 'Binodbabur Asar' was published in Anandamela 1994 followed by another story ' Bhay’ in another popular magazine Kishorebharati. Today he is one of the most admired Bengali writers in the young adults segment[2]. His work was not just limited to Science fiction. He started writing stories of all different genres[3] and created a new readership segment through interesting story plots and his own interesting story telling style. Strong human touch in his short stories and novels quickly engages with the readers of all the ages. His multi-continent based science fiction thrillers introduced Bengali Readership to a new style of fast paced science based thriller writing while maintaining its own Indian literary characteristics. Today he has got more than 100 short stories and many popular novels to his credit.

Writing Career[edit]

His first Science fiction novel published in 2009 was Sanket Rahasya (সংকেত রহস্য) from Patra Bharati[4], which involved protagonist ‘Anilikha’ in a multi continent based thriller.

Anilikha had since become a very popular character[5] [6]in Bengali fiction. Abhijnan’s other published popular works are Rahasya Jakhon Darwin (When the Mystery Is with Darwin),Rahasya Jakhon Nijeke Niye (When the Mystery Is All about Yourself), Rahasya Jakhon Rakte (When the Mystery is In the Blood), Majhe Matra Chabbis Din (With Only 24 Days Left), Rahasya Jakhon Sankete ( When the Mystery Is All in the Symbols), Sab Logicer Baire (Beyond the Logical Boundaries) – collection of short stories, Bhoutik Aloukik ( collection of horror and supernatural stories),Chokher Samne Mrityu" (Death in Front of your Eyes).  He plans to continue his experimentation with science fiction and bring it to the forefront of Bengali literature.

Though most of his initial works were in Science fiction, he subsequently wrote stories of all different genres and had been equally admired for his ghost, supernatural, mystery and crime stories.

Abhijnan shared ideas on crime fiction and contemporary literature with other internationally acclaimed authors through digital writers lab [7]and Kolkata Literature Festivals[8].

Contributions to literature[edit]

Abhijnan is a regular contributor to all the popular Bengali magazines. Many of his stories had been turned into popular audio plays[9][10][11] [12] He is the author of several novels and collections of short stories[13][14], most of them published in reputed Bengali Saradiya magazines like Kishorebharati[15][16], Suktara[17], Anandamela[18], Sandesh, Chira Sabuj Lekha.
