The institution of marriage is very strong in Abia, just as it is in other Igbo communities in the Eastern region of Nigeria. Marriage is contracted with the consent and participation of extended family members known as Umunna. It is not just the affair of the nuclear family unit, hence the popular saying in Igbo land “ofu onye adighi anu nwanyi” (no one man marries a woman alone). This sums up the people's attitude towards marriage.[2]

There are two governing structures in Abia community, just like in many communities in South-Eastern Nigeria. The first is represented by the traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty, the Igwe of the community and his ruling cabinet made up of representatives of all the village administrative units and advisers. The second structure is the Town Union headed by the elected President General and members of his executive.[5]
