Rahma Bourqia (born in Khemisset in 1949) is a Moroccan sociologist, anthropologist and writer who worked as a university professor in sociology and human studies.

She is considered one of the pioneering women in Morocco who have contributed to the development of Moroccan society. She obtained her bachelor in the field of social science from the University of Mohammed V and continued her studies in the same field at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. She worked as a university professor and worked for several national and international organisations. [1][2]

Career[edit]

She is the first woman to hold the position of a university president in Morocco in 2014, at the Hasssan II university of Mohammedia. She was also a member of the royal committee charged with reforming the family code in Morocco. She also hold the position of the dean in Rabat Faculty of human science, [3]. She is member of the Moroccan Academy of science. She is engaged in the social and political debate in Morocco, and she is playing an active role in the major reforms of education, higher education and the Family Code.[4][5]

Prize and Honnor[edit]

She won the Malcolm Prize for the best doctorate from the United States in 1988, which is awarded by the American Association for Studies on the Maghreb and the Middle East.

She also received honorary doctorates from Indiana University, the United States, then the University of Liège, Belgium, and the University of Paris-Ouest-Nanterre-la-Defense
