Abid Ali Khan (born May 5, 1984) is an Indian singer, composer, lyricist, and sarangi player, best known as the founder and lead vocalist of the internationally acclaimed fusion band Kaafila Music. Representing the ninth generation of a distinguished musical lineage, Khan is recognized for his contributions to Indian classical, Rajasthani folk, and fusion music, both in India and abroad. He has been honored with several prestigious awards and has performed in more than 50 countries, making him a prominent cultural ambassador of Indian music.

History

Abid Ali Khan was born into a family deeply rooted in Indian classical music. His grandfather, the late Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan Sahib, a noted sarangi player and vocalist, was his first guru. Khan continued his training under his father, Ustad Shokat Ali Khan, and his uncle, Ustad Liyakat Ali Khan—both renowned classical musicians.

He pursued formal musical education through a five-year diploma in vocal music from Lucknow University and an additional three-year diploma from Rajasthan Sangeet Sansthan. He continues to refine his skills under Dr. Lilawati Adsule, head of the Music Department at the University of Rajasthan.

Khan’s early accolades include winning the state-level light music competition organized by Sangam Kala Group in memory of Master Madan Mohan for four consecutive years (2001–2005). He received the Sur Sudha Award from P.L. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkande Sansthan in 2006 and the Young Talent Award from the West Zone Cultural Center, Government of India, in 2007.

As an approved artist of All India Radio, Jaipur, Khan has developed a distinguished career as both a solo performer and as the frontman of Kaafila Music, which he co-founded in 2006.
