Abigail O'Brien Ph. D. (1957) is an award-winning contemporary Irish Artist and the first female President of the Royal Hibernian Academy[1]. O'Brien is known for her Photography, Video, Sculpture, Sound, Embroidery and Handmade Objects.[2]

Abigail O’Brien Ph D. (born 1957 in Dublin, Ireland) is an award-winning contemporary artist who employs many media in her work.[2]

Abigail O’Brien is the first female President of the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin (founded in 1823)[4][5]. O’Brien was Secretary of the RHA from 2012 until 2017[2], the first time a female artist had held this position. As President of the RHA[6], O’Brien is also an ex-officio Member of the Board of the National Gallery of Ireland[7] and an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Scotland[8]

Abigail O’Brien received her early education in NCEA, NCAD 1995 Awarded Student of the Year  BA Fine Art NCAD -O’Brien later graduated with an MA Fine Art Painting from The National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1998 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts[9]  from the National University of Ireland in October 2019.

Throughout much of her work O’Brien observes traditionally male dominated environments and perceived gender roles, simultaneously revealing the absurd and subverting established truths. She is currently working on The Cardinal Virtues, Fortitude[11], Temperance[12], Prudence[13] and Justice
