Ability Online
Ability Online is a Canadian online community for children and young adults facing any sort of disability (intellectual or physical), chronic illness, or other social challenge.[1][2].
Activities
Ability Online runs forums and chat rooms for children and young people with disabilities and for parents and caregivers.[2] In addition, Ability Online also runs Ability Gives, a program which provides grants for families of disabled and chronically ill children for specialist equipment.[3]
History
The site was founded in 1991 by child psychiatrist Dr. Arlette Lefebvre (aka "Dr. Froggie") from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, and Brian Hillis with the aim of reducing isolation in disabled and chronically ill children.[4]
Membership
Membership is open to children of all ages and their families and caregivers.[1] Members are manually screened and verified prior to being given access to the site, and all public messages on the site are monitored by police-screened volunteers.[5] Ability Online holds the Kidsafe seal for online privacy and safety.[6]
