Abner Cope is an African-American portrait painter.

Early life[edit]

He was born in America's South in Savannah and is of African descent.

Cope studied at Georgia Southern University in Georgia where he received a B.A. in painting and printmaking and an M.F.A from Eastern Michigan University in Michigan.[1]

Career[edit]

Cope graduated with a B.A from Georgia Southern University where he studied painting and printmaking. During his time as an undergraduate at the university he accepted commissions having already demonstrated a good grasp on painting the figure.

After graduating from Georgia Southern, Cope with his wife and family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1975 intending to pursue graduate studies. He was accepted into the M.F.A. program at Eastern Michigan University in 1976. After graduation, Cope began working with a government summer program for children where he became the program director. During this same time, Cope began his academic career by securing a position with Central State University in Ohio to teach drawing and painting classes. Cope remained at Central State until retirement after 30 years.

After retirement, Cope and his wife moved back to Georgia, settling in Commerce, Georgia where he paints and teaches workshops.
