History[edit]
Clark Abt founded Abt Associates in 1965 in Cambridge Massachusetts.[8] The firm focused on transferring technology and systems used in the defense industry to civilian applications. The company used systems analysis, computer modeling and simulation methods for quantitative evaluations to improve social programs in areas such as criminal justice.[9] It also used social science methodologies such as case studies and cost-benefit analysis.[8]
In 1986, Clark Abt stepped down as president and CEO and remained involved as Chairman of the Board.[10] Kathleen Flanagan has been the CEO since 2009.[11]
Mergers and acquisitions[edit]
In 2006, Abt bought IBM’s public sector international practice.[12] The following year, Abt bought SRBI, a survey and market research organization.[13]
In 2013, Abt acquired JTA International, an Australia-based international health and social-sector consulting firm.[14] And in 2015, Abt merged with Stratus Consulting, an environmental research and consulting firm. [15]
