Abyss is a fictional villain set to appear in American comic books published by DC Comics. Their True alter ego has not been revealed yet, but they are set to make his debut appearance in Joshua Williamson and Jorge Molina's new Batman story arc, beginning in Batman #118.[1]

Publication history[edit]

Abyss will first appear in Issue #118 of the ongoing Batman series as a major villain of the upcoming 'Fear State' storyline, part of DC Comics' Infinite Frontier relaunch. The character was co-created by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Jorge Molina. Williamson has been a frequent writer for Batman comics ever since the Rebirth relaunch in 2016; he has also written several Flash issues.[2] Molina got his start in DC as the cover artist of several Birds of Prey issues.[3]

Fictional character biography[edit]

Very little is currently known about the villain who calls themselves Abyss. Williamson and Molina have teased that the character is connected in some way to the mysterious Batman Inc.[4]

Character design[edit]

Abyss's design appears to be inspired by the Grim Reaper, featuring sleek black metal armor with a skeletal chest plate, a black cowl and a shredded purple cape. For weapons, Abyss wields a sharp scythe and claw-like gloves on each hand. The character wears a cyberpunk inspired helmet with LED X symbols for eyes, presumably representing death.[5]
