Barbara "Babs" Gordon, also known as Batgirl, is a name of two fictional characters in the DC Super Hero Girls media franchise, based on the DC Comics character of the same name.

Conception and creation[edit]

First appearing in Detective Comics #359,[3] Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl, had become a popular comic book figure during the Silver Age of Comic Books, and has been featured in various adaptations related to the Batman franchise, including television, film, animation, video games, and other merchandise. The character was slated for a solo film set in the DC Extended Universe, starring Leslie Grace as the title character and intended to be released on HBO Max but was cancelled in August 2022. In 2011, Barbara Gordon / Batgirl was ranked 17th in both IGN's "Top 100 Comic Book Heroes" and Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics".[4][5]

Referring to the 2019 TV series, Tara Strong, the voice of Barbara Gordon / Batgirl, previously voiced her for a majority of the DC Animated Universe,[6][7] She also uses Twilight Sparkle, another character she voiced, from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic as an inspiration for Barbara Gordon / Batgirl's voice.[8]

Character[edit]

1st Generation[edit]

Barbara Gordon / Batgirl was accepted to Super Hero High solely based on her intelligence. She more than makes up for possessing zero super-powers with her smarts, her well-honed detective skills, and her computer genius. Before being accepted as a student, she was the tech assistant working at the school.[9] Honing her detective skills and using her curious, tech-focused brain, Barbara Gordon / Batgirl is always looking for opportunities to try out her newest crime-fighting gadgets.

2nd Generation[edit]

Barbar Gordon / Batgirl used to operate in Gotham City, where she craved for replacing Robin as Batman's partner, that is until her father James Gordon and herself move to Metropolis. Barbara started attending Metropolis High School, feeling very self-aware due to being the new transfer student, but she soon made friends who were also secretly superheroes, her friends being Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, Kara Danvers / Supergirl, Zee Zatara / Zatanna, Jessica Cruz / Green Lantern, and Karen Beecher / Bumblebee Barbara is also an employee at the "Burrito Bucket", hence she has an obsession with mexican food. Barbar Gordon / Batgirl is considered a comedic relief out of all of her friends. She is known to be bubbly, cheerful, upbeat and optimistic. She is the one who wants everyone, especially her friends, to get along and is often seen as the "cheerleader" in the group due of her contagious enthusiasm and zest for life. However, she is a fangirl, and her enthusiastic nature makes her destined to be Batman's future sidekick. She is also a creative problem solver and uses her creativity and her analytical thinking to stop the villains and help her friends.

Show creator, Lauren Faust described Barbara Gordon as "the Fangirl. Energetic. Optimistic. Encouraging. Fun". As a hero, Batgirl is a "Sleuth. Enthusiastic. Agile. Surprisingly analytical. Thinks outside the box."[10]
