Today, there are 13 faculties, 70 departments, 10 institutes, 39 research centres, 1,805 teachers, about 33,500 students, 18 residential halls and 2 hostels.[1][2] Two-thirds of the present faculty possesses degrees from universities in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. Many of them achieved international reputation for their scholarly works. Many also have the experience of teaching in well-known institutions of higher learning abroad.

Faculty of Business Studies[edit]
The Faculty of Business Studies (FBS) (Bengali: ব্যবসায় শিক্ষা অনুষদ) is one of the leading faculties of The University of Dhaka. In 1922, one year after the establishment of The University of Dhaka, Department of Commerce was founded under Faculty of Arts. Later in 1970 it started its activities as a separate faculty. At first it had only two departments-Accounting and Management. In 1974, The Department of Finance and The Department of Marketing came into existence. It was renamed as Faculty of Business Studies in 1994. It also has a Bureau of Business Research.
The Students of this faculty published a Business Magazines named the The Voice of Business (VOB). This is the semi-annual Business Magazine.VOB is the First and Only Business Magazine published by the Student of the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS), University of Dhaka. The Voice of Business has grown to become the largest student-run publication in the country. The Voice of Business focuses on stories that provide students with a broader understanding of business leadership, industry innovation, international perspectives, and career track advice. Prof. Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam is the Dean of this faculty.
It offers Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy programmes. In addition, it offers Evening MBA program for the executives. The BBA program is a four-year program. The program comprises 120 credit hours spread over eight semesters.

- Department of Management Studies
The Department of Management Studies (DMS), the successor of former Department of Management, was established in 1970 when The Department of Commerce emerged as an independent faculty. In fact, The Department of Commerce was introduced as a separate area of study in the academic session of 1922-23, just immediately after the establishment of University of Dhaka. The department is empowered to provide teaching for the degree of BBA and MBA as per rules and regulations of The University of Dhaka. It also offers academic programs leading to the award of Doctoral degree and Master of Philosophy, in addition to organize special programs, conferences, seminars and short courses. The vision of Management Studies Department is to stand out as the premier center of management education both in Bangladesh and in the Asian region.

- Department of Arabic
Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. A S M Abdullah
The Department of Arabic started its journey in 1921. In the beginning, it was named Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies. In 1980 the Department of Arabic became a separate department. Samsul Olama Abu Nasr Wahid was the first Head of the Department. Dr. S. M. Hussain, a former student and teacher of this department was the first Vice-Chancellor from the alumni of the University of Dhaka. The Department offers a four-year B.A. Honours, a one-year M.A., a two-year M. Phil and a three-year Ph.D. programme. The research students of the department have been contributing significantly to the different sectors at the national and international levels. The Department provides facilities to carry out advanced research in Classical and Modern Arabic literature in Prose and Poetry, History of Arabic Language and Literature, Arabic Philology and Linguistics, Comparative Literature and Linguistics, Arabic Literary Criticism and Comparative Literary Criticism, Arabic Calligraphy, Science of Interpretation, Arabic Lexicography, History of Islam and Islamic Civilization, Muslim Philosophy, Islamic Ideology and Research Methodology.

Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. A.K.Fazlul Haque
Dhaka University started her journey on 1 July in 1921 with only 3 faculties & 12 departments. The Department of Bengali is one of the twelve departments with which the University of Dhaka was launched in 1921 on its long & glorious journey. In a sense, the history of the department is largely the history of the University of Dhaka as well as the long journey to birth of our nation in 1971.Dhaka University for the very first time introduced a totally separated “BENGALI & SANSKRIT DEPARTMENT’ in the era Of united India. At the beginning, students were taught both Bengali & Sanskrit Literature. Although faculties emphasized on Bengali by making an enriched syllabus for it. The first chairman of this department was the great Sri Haroproshad Shastri who discovered & placed before the world the ancient document of Bengali script named “CHARJYAPAD”. The first reader of this department was Srish Chandra Chatarjee. Also the lecturer was the first student of “comparative philology” in the British era Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah & the famous manuscript expert Radha gobinda Boshak. This department excelled from its very first year of D.U by many important researches & many unknown theory & information belonging to Bengali done by her profound teachers. In 1970 “BENGALI & SANSKRIT DEPARTMENT” was separated into two parts & from then on the department took the name “DEPARTMENT OF BENGALI”. The department has already passed her glorious 80 long & successful years. She made many scholars who led the nation in 1971 & for the next crisis period. “DEPARTMENT OF BENGALI” lost many of her profound teachers & scholars during 1971 but still excels with her distinctive norms & heritage .

- Department of History
On the same day when the academic activities of University of Dhaka was started on 1 July 1921, Department of History started functioning along with few other departments with five teaching faculties and seven students in the B.A. (Hons.) programme. In 1923, admission to post graduate (Final Part) programme was started . From the very day of its commencement the Department of History has grown up to the level to accommodate six hundred students and to host thirty teachers till today.
From 1921 to 1971, University of Dhaka played an important role in contemporary politics and the teachers and students of History Department was an important part of it. Active participation of the teachers and students in the anti-colonial revolutionary movements of thirties, Language movements of 1952, Mass Upsurge of 1969 and Liberation movement of 1971 bears the testimony of the glorious history of the History Depar tment. Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. Abul Hussain Ahmed Kamal.[5]

The Department of Linguistics in University of Dhaka is a young department which was established in 1992. Students first were admitted to the Masters programme in the Department of Linguistics from the academic session of 1993–1994. The BA (Hons) programme was introduced from 1996–1997. The department is going to introduce a Postgraduate Diploma programme soon on Language and Communication. Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. Hakim Arif.[8]
- Department of World Religions
The Department of Comparative Religion was established on December 1, 1999 and Dr. Kazi Nurul Islam was appointed its Chairman. Currently the chairman of this department is Md. Ilias.[9]

Faculty of Social Sciences[edit]
The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1970. The academic activities of these departments are conducted by the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Dean of Social Science acts as the coordinator of the First Year BSS (Honours) Admission Test for the combined Unit known as 'Gha' Unit. The Faculty publishes Social Science Review (Dhaka University Studies, Part-D), a bi-monthly journal.
The departments under the Faculty offer four-year Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) and one-year Master of Social Sciences (MSS) degrees with the exception of the Population Sciences and Development Studies Departments. These two departments offer only two-year professional Master's degrees called MPS and MDS respectively. Moreover, the Faculty offers a two-year M.Phil and three-year Ph.D. degree in all disciplines.
Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed has been performing the responsibility as the elected Dean of the Faculty.

Faculty of Pharmacy[edit]
Founded in 1964, the Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka is the first and foremost institution providing pharmacy education in Bangladesh. Approximately 90 percent of the Bangladeshi pharmacists working in the country and abroad are graduates of the University of Dhaka. Realizing the increasing demand of pharmacy education in national and international stage Academic council of Dhaka University decided to establish Pharmacy Faculty in 1993 and it went on operation in 1995 under Dr. Mrs. Nurun Nahar Rahman (as acting Dean). First elected Dean was Prof. Dr. A.K.Azad Chowdhary.
In 2003, three new Departments were established under Pharmacy Faculty named Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics & Pharmaceutical Technology.

Faculty of Biological Science[edit]
It was established on the 1 January 1974. Previously the departments of this faculty was associated with the Faculty of Science. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Soil Science, Microbiology, Botany & Zoology are the mention-worthy departments of the faculty. It offers BSc (Honours), MSc, MS, M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses.
Initially this faculty consisted of the Departments of Soil Science (presently Soil, Water and Environment), Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry (presently Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), and Psychology. Later Department of Microbiology (1979), Department of Clinical Psychology (1997), Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries (1997) (presently Department of Fisheries) and Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (2000) became members of this Faculty when those departments were established.
The Faculty publishes the Dhaka University Journal of Biological Sciences.

Institutes[edit]
The institutes are the constituent schools of the university with separate governing bodies. They function under the executive and academic control of the University. There are in total 9 Institutes in Dhaka University.
Institute of Education and Research[edit]
The Institute of Education and Research (IER), University of Dhaka, was established through the joint efforts of the University of Dhaka, the then Government of Pakistan and the U.S. AID ( then ICA) Mission. The U.S. AID Mission in the then Pakistan entered into a contract with the Colorado State College, (later became University of Northern Colorado), Greeley, Colorado, U.S.A., for professional services to establish, organize and direct the initial stages of IER, including advanced overseas training of teachers. The contract came into effect on November 1, 1959. The classes of the Institute began on July 1, 1960 with 33 students of one year M.Ed. degree program. Over the year it has expanded and diversified its programmes. Number of students increased from 33 in 1960 to 700 (academic year 2002- 2003). The Institute of Education and Research, University of Dhaka is an apex institute in the field of professional education in Bangladesh. It is the only Institute of its kind under the public universities of Bangladesh which offers teaching programmes leading to higher professional degrees, conducts advanced research studies and provides extension services in education. Its professional staff, most of them having overseas post-graduation and doctoral degrees and long experiences with specialization in various aspects of education render professional services to Government sponsored committees and commissions on education to help develop the education sector of Bangladesh and provide consultancy services at both national and international levels.

Institute of Business Administration[edit]
Institute of Business Administration (IBA) carries the distinction of being the pioneer of all the business schools of Bangladesh. Commitment to the highest educational standards distinguishes IBA among the educational institutes in Bangladesh. IBA graduates are highly sought after by the industry, who have made outstanding contributions to various fields, both at home and abroad.
Founded in 1966, IBA began its journey by launching its flagship MBA program. In response to the growing demand for business education at the undergraduate level, the BBA program was started in 1993.
In a proud history spanning more than four decades, the teachers and students of IBA have partnered together to achieve a level of excellence still unmatched in Bangladesh.
Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT)[edit]
Institute of Statistical Research and Training, popularly known as ISRT, was established in 1964 by a statute of the University of Dhaka. The Institute offers 4-year BSc (Honors) and 1-year MS degree in Applied Statistics. PhD and MPhil degrees are also offered.
ISRT organizes training programs in Applied Statistics, SPSS and STATA for students in various disciplines, professionals, and academicians. The Institute is the proud publisher of the Journal of Statistical Research (JSR), a prestigious bi-annual International Journal in Statistical Sciences, published since 1970. It is an internationally renowned journal in the field of Statistics. ISRT maintains a vibrant academic environment encompassing a rich library with over 20,000 collections, and three state-of-the-art computer labs for graduate and undergraduate students. Late Professor Dr. Qazi Motahar Husain was the founder Director of ISRT. Muhammad Shuaib is the current Director.
Institute of Nutrition and Food Sciences[edit]
The INFS offers academic courses in Nutrition and Food Science. At present the Institute runs the following courses: Four years B.S.(Hons.), One year M.S, M.Phil and Ph.D. Apart from the academic programs the activities of INFS include basic and applied research in different aspects and fields of nutrition and food science including nutrition survey and surveillance, laboratory experiments, research in nutrition, food sciences, microbiology, health sciences, food and nutrition policy, evaluation of interventions, technical advisory services, and training. Since its establishment the INFS has conducted most of the nutrition research and training in Bangladesh. It also played an important role in nutrition advocacy drawing attention to the urgency of the nutritional problems and recommending means to address it. The INFS will continue its academic and training programs in various fields of nutrition and food science for development of trained manpower, field level activities in the assessment, experiments in the laboratory, monitoring and analysis of nutritional problems, and in the evaluation of the intervention programs.
The INFS has a group of highly qualified and experienced faculty members. They are from diverse disciplines, such as Nutritional Biochemistry, Food Science, Microbiology, Clinical Nutrition, Applied Nutrition, Community Nutrition, Social Nutrition, Nutrition Education, Nutrition Planning, Bio statistics, Bioengineering, and Instrumentation.
The Institute has its own library, having 10000 books, journals and periodicals, in the second floor of its building. Most of the books are on Nutrition, Biochemistry, Medical science, Food science, Microbiology, Economics, Home economics, Bio statistics, Sociology, Computer, Instrumentation and others. The teachers, the researchers and the students of the Institute can borrow books from the library; besides, books can be studied in the library.
Institute of Social Welfare and Research[edit]
The social welfare concept took a new direction in the nineteenth century, through certain processes and not by an accident. This was an era of social and technological change with intellectual adventure. The traditional concept of social work, charity with immediate assistance did not stand in the test of the changing time. It melted away before the challenge of emerging psycho-social and economic problems hatched by speedy growth of population, rapid industrialization and urbanization gave way to the modern concept, where belief in the dignity and potentiality of human, respect for his/her personality came in the fore. And ultimately the "Lady Bountiful" was replaced by the professional social worker to give solace and relief to the suffering humanity. With the ever-increasing socioeconomic problems, coupled with the wide acceptance of the concept of welfare state, the scope of social welfare as a profession has widened and got a momentum. Moreover as the history attests, substantial progress made by this profession in the shortest possible time, in the developed as well as the developing countries, has given it a firm footing and an assurance of smooth go-ahead.
Institute of Health Economics[edit]
Health economics has emerged over the past three decades as a major branch of economics that has enabled academicians of both developed and developing countries to influence the way we think about the determinants of health, and how we approach the organization and delivery of health care. The Institute of Health Economics (IHE), University of Dhaka, pioneered the development of health economics in Bangladesh in 1998, which is the only health economics teaching and research institute in South-Asia. IHE operates across all areas of the discipline, with a particular emphasis on methodological thinking and high policy impact through offering short courses/trainings and different academic degree programs. It is known for its quality education and also for its work in health status measurement, performance measurement and productivity, health care financing, economic evaluation of alternative healthcare programmes and treatment methods, measurement of burden of diseases, and econometric methodology. IHE offers the following academic programmes:BSS (Hons) in Health Economics, MSS in Health Economics, M.Phil and PhD.
Institute of Modern Languages(IML)[edit]
Institute of Modern Languages (IML) was established on 1 July 1974. Before this, IML joined with the Department of International Relations. According to the 6th Statutes of the Dhaka University Order 1973, the Institute functions under the executive and academic authorities of the Syndicate and the Academic Council of the University. The Institute is to provide teaching, training and guidance in order to prepare candidates for the Certificate of Proficiency, Diploma of Arts in Modern Languages, and for such other Diplomas and Degrees that may be decided upon by the University. At present the Institute offers 1-year non-degree courses (120 hours each course) on Bangla (only of the foreigners), Arabic, Chinese, Korean, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish language courses. In addition to the above courses, M.Phil., Ph.D. programs and 18-months MA in ELT is available at the Institute.[19] Besides, short courses on various languages are also offered. A library and 5 language labs are available at the Institute. A research Journal entitled Journal of the Institute of Modern Languages is published once a year by the Institute.[19] At present total number of the teachers is 49 (full-time: 25, part-time: 18, visiting foreign teachers: 6) and the number of the students is 1,581 (session: 2005-2006).[19]
Institute of Information Technology[edit]
In the annual session of June 2001, The Dhaka University Senate established Institute of Information Technology (IIT). by converting the erstwhile Computer Center (Estd. in 1985). The aim was to produce skilled manpower in the field of Information Technology (IT) and to establish a computer network in the University. The four-storey red ceramic IIT building has a quiet ambience and is adjacent to Dhaka University Centre of Excellence in Science and the Institute of Statistical Research and Training
Institute of Leather Engineering & Technology[edit]
The Institute of Leather Engineering & Technology is an educational institution of University of Dhaka.This institute provides education related to the art and technology of making leather, leather products, and footwear.It was established in 2011. The B.S.C in Leather Engineering, Leather Product Engineering and Footwear Engineering is a four years program.
Institute of Energy[edit]
The Institute of Energy (IE), University of Dhaka established in November 2013 by conversion of erstwhile Institute of Renewable Energy (2011). This institute is pioneer in doing research and education in the field of Renewable Energy Technology in Bangladesh from its inception since 1981as Renewable Energy Research Centre. In order to produce efficient and qualified manpower in this field we should make effort to educate our young generation, equip them with quality and market oriented know how for the country. It will open up the world of opportunity for them to contribution in this field all over the world. Development of required manpower in the field of Renewable Energy Technology would cater the growing demand of time. The Institute of Energy has taken up this timely step to introduce an MS program in Renewable Energy Technology of 18 months duration since 2011. This course is open to graduates of multiple disciplines as mentioned in the application requirement.
