Dhaka University National Model United Nations (DUNMUN) is a Model United Nations conference of Bangladesh held in the University of Dhaka. DUNMUN is considered as the most prestigious and the largest Model United Nations conference in Bangladesh and one of the largest Model United Nations conference in Asia.[1]

Youths from different corners of the world can take part in this Model United Nations conference as delegates in order to discuss on global issues and get a solution of those issues on their own. A delegate can gain insight into the modus operandi of the United Nations and the dynamics of international politics by playing the role of a diplomat and representing a country or an organization.

Dhaka University Model United Nations Association (DUMUNA) organizes this conference annually since 2012.[2]

Background[edit]

DUNMUN started its journey arm in arm with DUMUNA in 2012. DUMUNA organized the first session of DUNMUN conference from 23 to 26 December 2012 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the University of Dhaka.[3]

This conference was followed by the DUNMUN 2013 in collaboration with UNIC Dhaka from 17 to 20 September 2013 and later on, the third session of the conference was held from December 21 to December 24 of 2014 which was supported by ActionAid, UNIC Dhaka and East Asia Study Center.

Dhaka University National Model United Nations conference consists of a number of committee sessions, plenary sessions and socials. The conference ends up with a closing ceremony followed by a gala dinner.

Dhaka University National Model United Nations 2012[edit]

The first ever DUNMUN conference was held from 23 to 26 December 2012. The conference was held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the University of Dhaka.[4]

Around 200 students from 28 universities from different corners of the country participated the four days long conference which was held under the theme- ‘Toward Developing Global Partnership for Sustainability’.

DUMUNA arranged a workshop for the delegates who were selected to take part in the conference by the DUNMUN Secretariat prior to the conference. The first session accommodated six committees including Economic and Financial Committee, Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Security Council, World Bank, and United Nations Special Committee for Bangladesh Affairs.

Several draft resolutions were prepared and submitted by the committees and the final resolutions were passed by the conference. The conference ended up with a closing ceremony which was attended by the honourable Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique as the chief guest. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official Shamim Ahsan, Vice Chancellor of ASA University Dr. Dalim Chandra Borman were also present as guests.

After a charming cultural night the program ended with a grand dinner.

Dhaka University National Model United Nations 2013[edit]

The second session of DUNMUN was organized by DUMUNA at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the University of Dhaka in collaboration with the UNIC Dhaka.[5]

The conference was held from September 17 to September 20 of 2013 with the participation of 500 students from 36 institutions under the theme – ‘Uphold Humanity, Attain Peace’. There were 36 campus ambassadors from the institutions of Bangladesh and 6 more from abroad.

The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest of the ceremony Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, while the President of DUMUNA Fayez Ahmed chaired the session. The ceremony was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the North South UniversityAmin U Sarker and Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka Kazi Ali Reza.[6]

DUNMUN 2012 consisted of eight committees – Economic and Financial Committee, United Nations Security Council, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Human Rights Council, Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee, World Bank, United Nations Special Committee for Bangladesh Affairs, World Health Organization and World Trade Organization.[7]

On the second day of the conference the committees started their proceedings and delegates locked themselves in debates and negotiations. Delegates also took part in a cultural event that was held in the evening of that day at the TSC Auditorium.

The third day was marked by idea exchange session in the evening of the conference along with committee sessions. Two special plenary sessions entitles ‘Meet the Diplomats’ was the attraction of the conference as the participants bagged the opportunity to meet and share experiences with two former diplomats, Mr. Ashfaqur Rahman and Mr. Jamil Majid.

On the final day the committees submitted their draft resolution papers and handful of them were passed. The best position papers, special mentioned, outstanding ans best delegates of the conference were awarded in the award giving ceremony.[8]

The closing ceremony was attended by Treasurer of the University of Dhaka Professor Dr. Kamal Uddin as the chief guest. UNDP Deputy Country Director Mr. Nick Beresford, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University Dr. Ainun Nishat, Vice Chancellor of ASA University Dr. Dalim Chandra Borman and UNIC Dhaka Officer-in-Chge Mr. Kazi Ali Reza were present as the guests of honour.[9] A banquet session was held after the closing ceremony.

Dhaka University National Model United Nations 2014[edit]

The third session of the largest Model United Nations of the country was held from December 21 to December 24 of 2014 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban. Keeping in mind the approaching deadline for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the deliberations of the international community to finalise the next set of sustainable development agenda, the theme was chosen as Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development for the DUNMUN 2014.

DUNMUN 2014 had ten committees. The committees are United Nations Security Council, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNODC, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Human Rights Council, Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee, World Bank, Special Committee for Bangladesh Affairs and Ad Hoc Committee for Intelligence Agency.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique while UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Argentina Matavel Piccin was present as guest of honour on December 21.[10] The ceremony was attended by Professor Delwar Hossain from the Department of International Relations of the University of Dhaka, the councilor of Cultural Affairs from the Embassy of Mr. China Chen Shuang, and the Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka Md Moniruzzaman.[11]

The opening ceremony was followed by a cultural event entitled Bangladesh Night. The members of DUMUNA presented the culture of Bangladesh to the delegates from different institutions of different corners of the world.

On the second day, the committees started their proceedings and discussions on their agenda with a view to prepare a resolution. Delegates of different countries argued and stressed their stand.[12]

DUNMUN 2014 was marked by cultural exchanges between the students from 13 separate countries. The International Night that was held on December 22 included performances from the delegates and they were given the floor to represent the culture of their countries.[13]

On the third day, committees continued their sessions to reach an agreement over the agenda given to them.

On the final day of the conference, nine of the ten proposed resolutions were passed in the plenary session that was followed by a closing and award giving ceremony session.[14]

In the award ceremony, delegates of the ten committees were awarded for excellence in different categories. Faiyaz Murshid Kazi, Director (UN) from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, handed over crests and certificates to the awardees while the Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka Mr. Md. Moniruzzaman was present.[15]
