Acanac Inc. is a privately held Canadian Residential telecommunications company founded in 2004. It was acquired by Distributel in 2011 and currently provides High Speed Internet and VoIP Home Phone service throughout Ontario and Quebec.[1]
History[edit]
Acanac was established in 2004 as an Internet wholesaler in Ontario and Quebec. In 2011, they were acquired by another Canadian ISP - Distributel - who integrated Acanac in its business as their discount Internet service provider brand. Distributel has made significant investments in the Acanac brand to improve its technical group, support group and service infrastructure.
On December 22, 2016, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission ruled that broadband Internet access is considered a basic communications need for all Canadians. It established a fund of $750 million to be spent over the next 5 years, with the goal of providing a minimum download speed of 50 Mbps to all Canadians. As a result, the 3 major players in Canada's telecommunications industry lowered their prices to 3rd party re-sellers like Acanac, Teksavvy and VMedia.[2]
Services[edit]
Acanac provides many different types of telecommunications services.
Voice[edit]
Acanac provides VoIP Home Phone service to their customers. VoIP, or Digital Home Phone, is becoming a popular, feature-rich, inexpensive alternative to traditional Home Phone service.
Internet[edit]
Acanac offers 2 types of Internet service to their customers - Cable Internet and DSL Internet. Their DSL speeds range from 6 Mbps to 50 Mbps. Their DSL packages also offer Naked DSL or Dry Loop.
Acanac's Cable packages range in speed from 15 Mbps to 100 Mbps.
Criticism[edit]
Acanac has faced criticism since its inception for poor customer service and slow Internet speeds during congested times. Since Distributel acquired Acanac, new management under the guidance of Matt Stein has made improvements to their customer service program and infrastructure to better align with Distributel's corporate image and standard.
