Adam “Maverick” Assenza (born December 31, 1987) is a Canadian mixed martial artist who competes in the lightweight division. He is currently the #2 ranked lightweight in Canada and has fought for various promotions, such as BTC Fight Promotions, Legacy Fighting Alliance, and Score Fighting Series. He has a professional record of 18 wins and 7 losses, with 10 wins by knockout or technical knockout.

Early life and career[edit]

Assenza was born and raised in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. He began training in martial arts at a young age, but was mostly focused on gymnastics training until moving into kickboxing, boxing, and wrestling.

He made his amateur MMA debut in 2010, winning three fights and losing one. He turned professional in 2011, fighting for Score Fighting Series, where he won three fights and lost two. He then fought for various regional promotions, such as Z Promotions, Global Warriors FC, and Pro Fighting Series, accumulating a record of 9 wins and 5 losses.

BTC Fight Promotions[edit]

In 2017, Assenza signed with BTC Fight Promotions, a Canadian MMA organization based in Ontario. He made his debut at BTC 1: Genesis, where he defeated Braedon Ward by TKO in the first round. He then fought at BTC 2: Valhalla, where he knocked out Jesse Erickson in the first round. He continued his winning streak at BTC 3: Prophecy, where he knocked out Shawn Wallace in the first round.

At BTC 4: Vendetta, Assenza faced his toughest challenge yet, as he took on UFC veteran Jason Saggo. Assenza lost the fight by submission in the first round, ending his four-fight win streak. He bounced back at BTC 6: Night of Champions, where he defeated Mark Coates by TKO after Coates retired at the end of the first round.

At BTC 7: Annihilation, Assenza faced Josh Wick, a Bellator veteran and the #1 ranked lightweight in Canada. Assenza lost the fight by TKO in the first round, suffering his second loss in BTC. He returned to the win column at BTC 8: Eliminator, where he defeated Marco Polo Reyes, a former UFC fighter, by split decision.

At BTC 9: Rampage, Assenza faced Cody Pfister, another former UFC fighter and the #1 ranked lightweight in the United States. Assenza won the fight by split decision, earning the biggest win of his career and the BTC lightweight title.

Legacy Fighting Alliance[edit]

In 2021, Assenza signed with Legacy Fighting Alliance, a major MMA promotion based in the United States. He made his debut at LFA 139, where he headlined the event against Jose Cleiton de Melo Jr., the #1 ranked lightweight in Brazil. Assenza lost the fight by TKO in the third round, snapping his three-fight win streak.

He then fought at LFA 155, where he faced Yemi Oduwole, the #2 ranked lightweight in the United States. Assenza won the fight by TKO in the third round, handing Oduwole his first professional loss.

Fighting style[edit]

Assenza is known for his aggressive and exciting fighting style, often engaging in stand-up exchanges and looking for the finish. He has a background in striking, with a black belt in karate and experience in kickboxing and boxing. He also has a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and trains with Burlington Academy of Martial Arts.

He has won 10 of his 18 professional fights by knockout or technical knockout, demonstrating his power and accuracy. He has also shown his durability and resilience, as he has never been knocked out in his career. He has only been submitted three times, twice by UFC veterans and once by a Bellator veteran.
