Adnan Atalay (born 1952, Kayseri) is a Turkish music educator, musicologist, and composer.[1][2]
His work includes polyphonic choral compositions and arrangements, piano pieces collected in his album Camdaki Damlalar (“Drops on the Glass”), and musicological research and publications.[3][4] He has published the choral collection Polifonik Koro için 10 Parça and textbooks on music theory and notation, including Nota Yazım Kuralları ve Türk Müziğinde Nota Yazımı and the co-authored series Müzik Teorisi (Armoni ve Kontrpuan).[5][6][7]
Education and career
He completed the Music Seminar Program of the Ankara Boys’ Primary Teachers’ School in 1970 and graduated from the Music Department of the Gazi Education Institute in 1973.[8][9]
In 1974, he was appointed as an assistant in Music Theory (harmony and counterpoint) and Ear Training in the same department.[8]
During his assistantship period under the guidance of Nurhan Cangal, in addition to the structured four-year assistantship program, he collaborated with Cangal to prepare the instructional books Müzik Teorisi (Armoni ve Kontrpuan) I–III by revising and completing the harmonized examples of Prof. Eduard Zuckmayer.[8][10] Beginning in 1976, these volumes were published by YAYKUR (Open Higher Education Institution) as course materials in harmony and counterpoint.[10]
Under the guidance of Nurhan Cangal and Erdoğan Okyay, Atalay completed his assistantship thesis titled A Solfège Method Based on Turkish Folk Music in 1978. Following this, he was appointed as an instructor in Music Theory (harmony and counterpoint) and Ear Training in the same department.[8][4]
A year later, Atalay transferred to the newly established Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Ege University, where he became an assistant in Counterpoint History. During his second four-year assistantship under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gültekin Oransay, Atalay expanded his studies beyond harmony, counterpoint, and ear training to include historical music writings, the physics of sound, and Ottoman transcription.[8]
In 1983, Atalay was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Music at Dokuz Eylül University’s Buca Faculty of Education, where he taught courses in harmony, counterpoint, musical forms, analysis, traditional Turkish art music and related topics.[8][4]
In 1989, Atalay completed a master's degree in the Department of Musicology at Dokuz Eylül University’s Institute of Social Sciences with a thesis titled Geleneksel Türk Sanat Musikisinde Perde Dizgeleri ("Pitch Systems in Traditional Turkish Art Music") and received the title of “science specialist”.[11][12] In the same period, he also received his “proficiency in art” diploma in musicology.[8]
Research and publications
Atalay has written extensively on Turkish music theory, notation, and pedagogy. He is the author of the 58-page article "Müzik Yazıları" ("Musical Notation") published in volume 3 (1985) of the Say Müzik Ansiklopedisi, edited by Ahmet Say. In the editorial note preceding the article, Say described it as a research-based and comprehensive study and expressed his gratitude to Atalay for preparing what he considered the first work of its scope published in Turkey.[13][14] The article, divided into five main sections, surveys various historical musical notations, ranging from alphabetic writings, tablatures, Dasia notation, and neumatic notation used in European musical traditions to modern staff notation and contemporary music writing. It also discusses historical musical notations used in Turkish music writing, such as Ebced notation, Kantemiroğlu (Cantemir) notation, Hamparsum notation, and Ali Ufki’s notation.[15]
Later, when the Say Müzik Ansiklopedisi was reformatted and republished in three volumes, long articles such as "Müzik Yazıları" were omitted from the new edition. As the final four-volume set went out of print, Atalay made the original text available on his official website for use by musicology researchers.[16]
Atalay also contributed to Nurhan Cangal’s book Armoni (Arkadaş Publishing, Ankara; 1st ed. 1999, 2nd ed. 2002) and wrote the first five chapters of the revised edition, which summarize the sections on harmony from the Müzik Teorisi I–III books co-authored and published by Atalay and Cangal in 1976–1977. These 87 pages, as stated in the book’s preface, were written by Atalay.[17]
Atalay has contributed articles to periodicals including Musichall, Konser Arkası, and AKOB magazines.[18][19][20][21] He shares his musicological research with the academic community through conferences and seminars at various universities; for example, in April 2025 he delivered an online lecture at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University titled "Türk ve Batı Müziği Ses (Perde) Sistemlerine Bakışımızdaki Selenbilimsel ve Tarihsel Yanlışlar".[22][23]

Atalay’s piano output is centred on the collection Camdaki Damlalar (“Drops on the Glass”), which includes 30 works — 21 original pieces and 9 arrangements — composed between 1972 and 2019. The first edition of the album was published in 2015 (ISBN 9786054957187 Search this book on
