Adrian Chase, also known by his alter-ego Vigilante, is a fictional character in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), firs introduced in the first episode of The Suicide Squad (2021) spin-off television series Peacemaker. The character is based on the DC Comics character of the same name, created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, and was adapted for television in 2022 by James Gunn. Adrian Chase is portrayed by Freddie Stroma.

In the series, Adrian is a vigilante who idolises Peacemaker and later joins him on his black ops mission to kill alien beings hosted in humans known as "Butterflies".

Fictional character biography[edit]

Little is known about Adrian Chase's early life, but he has been a vigilante for sometime and had idolised Peacemaker.

In 2022, five months after Peacemaker's mission in Corto Maltese with Task Force X, Adrian comes to his trailer in an attempt to cheer Chris up after suffering from PTSD. Adrian invites Chris to a target practice. After Chris was attacked by an alien "Butterfly", Adrian and Chris learn that the device from the Butterfly's apartment is a miniature spaceship. Adrian joins Chris' mission to assassinate suspected Butterfly - United States Senator Royland Goff and his family. Chris becomes hesitant to kill them so Adrian does it for him. However, just before Adrian can kill Goff, his bodyguard Judomaster appears and captures them. During interrogation, Goff tortures Adrian, resulting in his pinky toe getting cut off, forcing Chris to reveal information. They are saved by Chris' team, black ops "Project Butterfly", from which member John Economos incapacitates Judomaster and takes him back to their base to heal. Adrian drives Chris back to his father Auggie's house to equipment but learns that he is back in prison from his neighbour. Adrian then takes Chris to see his father in prison, despite team member Leota Adebayo's intervention. Leota then tells Adrian that Chris is better off without his father, leading Adrian to get himself arrested and sent to the same prison and kill Auggie himself, but fails to do so. Adrian is then bailed out by team member Emilia Harcourt.

Portrayal[edit]

Stroma was cast in May 2021, replacing Chris Conrad, who was cast in November 2020.[1] In an interview with Comicbook.com, Stroma expressed that Gunn's version of the character is very different from the comics, and that he had read 12 issues of the Vigilante comic books and found no comparison between Gunn's and the comic book versions of the character.[2]
