Aespa (Hangul: 에스파; stylized as aespa or æspa) is an upcoming South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. They are expected to debut in November 2020.
History[edit]
2016–2019: Pre-debut activites[edit]
Member Ningning was introduced as part of SM Rookies on September 19, 2016. She later appeared on My SMT as part of the Who's The Best? segment with other trainees, and recorded several cover songs for the animated show Shining Star between 2017 and 2018.
Karina appeared in labelmate Taemin's music video for "Want" in February 2019, and performed with him on several music programs in the weeks following. She was not officially confirmed as a trainee until October 2020, after SM announced they would be taking legal action against those who spread malicious rumors against her.[1]
2020: Introduction and debut[edit]
The group was first teased at the end the music video for SuperM's "One (Monster & Infinity)", when the letter æ appeared on Taemin's phone screen. During SuperM's reaction to the video, he remarked the scene was a "big spoiler" and a clue about the "next story".[2]
On October 26, various social media platforms were opened without prior announcement. Later that day, SM Entertainment confirmed they were meant for the upcoming band, and were set to debut in November. The label explained the group's name originated from the terms "avatar", "experience", and "aspect".[3] Aespa's concept was further elaborated upon by Lee Soo-man during a keynote speech on October 28, explaining that the group will contain human members and their virtual counterparts.[4]
