The African Planning Society (APS) is a learned society (professional association) in Africa with the goal of advancing Urban and regional planning across the African continent.[3] It was established in 2018, initially as African Urban Community of Practice (AUCoP), as a project of the African Urban Institute. The Society has 48 country chapters and 6 regional chapters across Africa.[4] It promotes policy and advocacy for better policies in the Built environment.[5]
Membership categories[edit]
The following are membership categories of the Society and members are entitled to designated Post-nominal letters:[6]
- AMAPS: Associate Member of the African Planning Society The entry level for APS membership, AMAPS is awarded to students and graduates in the planning and development of the built environment who are still to qualify as industry professionals.
- MAPS: Member of the African Planning Society is awarded to members who are industry professionals in the field of planning and development of built environment in Africa.
- FAPS: Fellow of the African Planning Society is awarded to members who have made an outstanding contribution to Urban planning in Africa.
Divisions[edit]
The society is organised around 6 divisions based on various planning topics across Africa. The divisions cover broad areas of planning and also special topic clusters in the built environment.[7]
- City & Regional Planning Division for City Planning and promoting aims of the Society for sustainable communities. 5 topic clusters.
- Housing & Community Development Division, promoting housing provision and better communities in Africa. 5 topic clusters.
- Governance Division promoting better local governance in Africa's built environment. 4 topic clusters.
- Economic Development Division, promoting Economic development of African communities. 4 topic clusters.
- Environmental Planning Division advancing Environmental protection in African built environment. 3 topic clusters.
- Transportation Planning Division, promoting sustainable mobility in African communities. 4 topic clusters.
