AfterQuery
AfterQuery is an American artificial intelligence company based in San Francisco, California, that produces human-curated training datasets, reinforcement-learning environments, and evaluation benchmarks for large language models and artificial intelligence agents.[1][2] It was founded in January 2025 by Spencer Mateega (CEO), Carlos Georgescu (CTO), and Danny Tang.[2][3]
History
Mateega and Georgescu met during a high-school Google computer science summer program and later interned together at Meta. While still students—Mateega at the University of Pennsylvania and Georgescu at the University of British Columbia—they submitted an application to Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch without a defined product, assembling it within 48 hours before the deadline.[1]
The founders' first product, an AI agent for finance, was unsuccessful. They concluded that large language models struggled with many professional workflows because they had not been trained on how professionals actually behave throughout their work, prompting a pivot from building end-user applications to producing training data instead.[1]
In April 2026, AfterQuery announced a $30 million Series A funding round at a $300 million valuation, led by Altos Ventures, with participation from The Raine Group, Y Combinator, BoxGroup, and individual investors from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta Superintelligence Labs, and Microsoft's AI division.[1][4] The company said it had surpassed $100 million in annualized revenue run rate at the time of the announcement, roughly fourteen months after launch.[1][4]
According to Forbes, AfterQuery competes with data-labeling firms such as Mercor in selling training data to AI labs including OpenAI and Anthropic; its CEO has said the company differentiates itself from competitors that rely on large contractor pools by building custom software systems to validate training data.[1] A private-markets analysis by Sacra similarly identifies Mercor and Surge AI as AfterQuery's closest strategic competitors, alongside Scale AI and Labelbox, and notes that AfterQuery's revenue is concentrated among a small number of frontier AI labs and large technology companies.[4]
AfterQuery Experts
AfterQuery Experts is a contributor-facing platform through which domain professionals are recruited and paid to complete task-based work used to train AI models and datasets. The platform draws on a network of nearly 100,000 verified professionals across engineering, medicine, law, and finance.[4]
