Afterplace is a role-playing mobile phone game created by independent game developer Evan Kice. It was first released in December 2022.

Content

Players take the role of an unknown child who wakes up in a strange place known as the "island", which traps a lot of strange beings. Throughout the game, players can control the child to roam around, interact with various non-player characters, and discover secrets behind the island and the trapped creatures.[2]

Afterplace's assets are made in pixel art. It is also intentionally designed to be played on mobile phones with one-finger control.[3]

Reception

Afterplace received largely positive reviews. Apple Design Award praised Afterplace for its one-finger control, interactions between hero and enemy, stretched-out level design, clever dialogue, and accessibility options, stating that the game can "appeal to anyone, regardless of their video game history."[3] Quick from Pocket Gamer compliments the game's aesthetics, natural dialog, effective atmospheric music, and wide range of enemy design.[2] 148Apps gives the game a 4-star rating out of 5, commenting that the game is "so thick with beautiful, touching, charming, strange, and surreal locations and secrets", but saying that some of its design decisions, such as the lack of maps and waypoints, result in some clunky and obtuse player experience.[4] Nelson from TouchArcade states that Afterplace is impressive at how it's guiding players subtly and noted the game's character design, streamlined controls, and fantastic soundtrack.[5]

Awards
