Agitha (The Legend of Zelda)
Agitha is a character in The Legend of Zelda, originating from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.[1] In Twilight Princess, she is is presented in a minor NPC role as a fanciful young girl who believes herself to be the "Princess of Bugs", and gives the player a bug collecting side-quest.
Agitha gained considerable recognition when she was unexpectedly announced as a warrior in Hyrule Warriors, which was met with both amusement and bewilderment.[2][3][4][5]
Appearances[edit]
Twilight Princess[edit]
Within Twilight Princess, Agitha is an NPC who asks Link for help in collecting bugs for a "ball" she is holding at her home, which she calls her "castle". There are twelve types of bugs, each species having both a male and female for 24 bugs total. For each Bug Link gives her, she gives him 50 Rupees. For each time he completes a pair, she gives him 100 Rupees. When Link gives her the first Bug, she gives him the Big Wallet. After taking all 24 bugs to Agitha, Link receives the Giant Wallet.
Although not revealed in game, Agitha is canonically 10-years-old in her role in Twilight Princess.[1]
Hyrule Warriors[edit]
Agitha is a playable Warrior in Hyrule Warriors. She fights by summoning swarms of Golden Butterflies and giant Golden Beetles with her Parasol weapon to aid her in battle.
In the game's Legend Mode, Agitha first appears in "Land of Twilight". She becomes cornered by the Dark Forces' Bulblins, but is shortly saved by Lana. She decides to aid the Hyrulean Forces to find the land's Gate of Souls by having her Goddess Butterfly lead the way. However, it is captured by Midna (whom Agitha refers to as "Miss Kitty"), who then uses it to locate Cia. The Hyrulean Forces manage to defeat her and retrieve the Goddess Butterfly. Agitha accompanies the Hyrulean Forces as they combat Zant in the Palace of Twilight, and later Cia and her Dark Forces.
Reception[edit]
Agitha's reception as a side-character in Twilight Princess is mixed. Some people give praise to her character's sweet, quirky, or kind characteristics, while others consider her delusional "princess of the bugs" shtick to be "creepy" and "off-putting", with some even perceiving her as a mentally ill schizophrenic. This was aided by the ambiguity of her age in-game, with her being often interpreted as teenager on par with Link. However, canonically, she is 10-years-old, a fact that was only mentioned in out-of-game-materials.[1]
The announcement of Agitha as a playable warrior in Hyrule Warriors was met with overwhelming bewilderment, however beyond this initial shock, reception to the news by news outlets was mostly positive,[2][6][3][4] and was touted as the principle example of Hyrule Warriors being able to utilise the Zelda franchise in a unique and fun way.[7] However, reception to her as a warrior post-release, particularly by fans, has been mixed, with some considering her too weak, "weird", or not worth the effort of unlocking, while others consider her one of the more unique fighters in the game.[8][9]
Following the release of Hyrule Warriors, Agitha's recognition in Twilight Princess has changed. She is now often cited as being a "main character" of said game.[10]
