Aharon Maman (born 1 November 1947) is an Israeli linguist who serves as the president of the Academy of the Hebrew Language. He is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Hebrew language at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a recipient of the Israel Prize for 2019 for research into Jewish languages and literatures and folk culture, and of the Nissim Gaon Prize for 2012 for research into North African Jewry. He has been a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2019.

Biography

Aharon Maman was born in Morocco, in the town of Er-Rich in the Tafilalt region. His father was active in the immigration of Jews to Israel and was imprisoned for this activity.[1] His family immigrated to Israel in 1964.[citation needed]

He studied Hebrew language and Arabic language and Arabic literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1984, he submitted his doctoral dissertation in Hebrew, titled "A Comparison of the Vocabulary of Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic in Hebrew Linguistic Works from Saadia Gaon (early 10th century) to Abraham ibn Barun (early 12th century)."[citation needed]

He served as a lecturer in the Department of Hebrew Language and was head of the department. He is the academic director of the Hebrew Language Traditions Project and the Hebrew Grammatical Literature Project.[citation needed]

He also served as head of the Ben-Zvi Institute for the Study of Jewish Communities in the East, head of the Mandel Institute for Jewish Studies, and director of the Center for the Study of the Traditions of Jewish Communities and the Hebrew Grammatical Literature Project.[citation needed]

Maman was elected an associate member of the Academy of the Hebrew Language in 1998, a full member in 2003, and vice president in 2010.[citation needed]

In 1993, he received a Fulbright scholarship for further study in the United States.[2]

In 2011, he received the Nissim Gaon Prize for research into North African Jewry.[citation needed]

In 2019, he received the Israel Prize for research into Jewish languages and literatures and folk culture. In June 2019, he was elected to the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.[citation needed]

In 2022, he was appointed president of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, succeeding Moshe Bar-Asher, who retired.[citation needed]

Personal life

He is married to Rachel and has four children. He was one of the founders of the Israeli settlement of Psagot in the Binyamin region and lived there for about 40 years. He currently lives in Rehovot.

Field of specialization

Aharon Maman researches materials from the Cairo Geniza in Judeo-Arabic from the Middle Ages, as well as aspects of Jewish Maghrebi culture in the modern era, including reading traditions of the Hebrew Bible and other classical texts. In addition, he researches the Hebrew language and grammatical thought of rabbinic and Karaite grammarians in the 10th-13th centuries and identifies lost works in this field in the Geniza.
