Eugenia (Genia) Kanelbaum Berman (1953-June 11, 2003) was one of the seventeen bus passengers who were murdered in the Davidka Square bus bombing on June 11, 2003 in Jerusalem.[1]

Early life and career

Eugenia Berman (née Kanelbaum), nicknamed Genia, was born on 25 January 1953 to parents Abba and Mary Kanelbaum in Lvov, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. At age four they moved to Bytom, Poland. In 1961 the family, including her older brother, Kuba (Yaakov) moved to Israel and settled in Holon.

After her army service, she studied art history and English literature at Hebrew University. Upon completion of her BA degree she also received a teaching certificate for teaching English language. Several months before her murder she received her master's degree in education from the University of Derby's Israel program.

Genia taught English, art, and art history at the Moriah School in Jerusalem and later in night school at the Gymnasia in Jerusalem. She also taught Hebrew to new immigrants. She wrote a book about how to teach English as a second language and was working on a second book.

She spoke fluent Polish, Russian, Hebrew and English.

As a student at Hebrew University she met her husband, Jay, whom she married in 1975. She had 5 children, 4 daughters and one son. The bombing took place on the day before her twenty-eight wedding anniversary.

Suicide bombing

Genia was a passenger on bus 14a towards the center of town in order to attend an English teacher's conference. The first hint that something was wrong was when fellow teachers told her husband that she had never arrived at the meeting.

Abd al-Mu'ti Shabana, a Palestinian suicide bomber dressed as an Orthodox Jew, boarded the bus at the Mahane Yehuda market bus stop on Jaffa Road. At the Davidka Square, in front of the Clal building, the bomber detonated his explosive device, which contained a large quantity of metal shrapnel designed to cause maximum casualties.[2][3][4][5]

Seventeen people, including Genia, were murdered and over 100 were injured.[6] The other people who were killed included: Sgt. Tamar Ben-Eliahu, 20, of Moshav Paran; Alan Beer, 47, of Jerusalem; Elsa Cohen, 70, of Jerusalem; Zvi Cohen, 39, of Jerusalem; Roi Eliraz, 22, of Mevaseret Zion; Alexander Kazaris, 77, of Jerusalem; Yaffa Mualem, 65, of Jerusalem; Yaniv Obayed, 22, of Herzliya; Bat-El Ohana, 21, of Kiryat Ata; Anna Orgal, 55, of Jerusalem; Zippora Pesahovitch, 54, of Zur Hadassah; Bianca Shahrur, 62, of Jerusalem; Malka Sultan, 67, of Jerusalem; Bertine Tita, 75, of Jerusalem and Haile Abraha Hawki of Eritrea. Miriam Levy, 74, of Jerusalem died of her wounds on June 12.[7][3]

Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack. Other cell members who were involved in the attack were: Abdallah Abd al-Qader al-Qawasmeh, Basel Muhammad Shafiq Abd al-Qader al-Qawasmeh, and Omar Sharif.[4]
