Air Panama Flight 982 was a regularly scheduled passenger flight from Panama City Albrook "Marcos A. Gelabert" International Airport (PAC/MPMG), to Bocas del Toro "Isla Colón" International Airport (BOC/MPBO). On May 16, 2025, the Fokker 50 operating crashed after a runway excursion. All 35 passengers and three crew survived. The aircraft was written off.[1][2][3]

Aircraft

The aircraft was a Fokker 50, registered as HP-1899PST, and manufactured in 1994. It was delivered to Air Panama in 2022. It had previously flown for Alliance Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, and Formosa Airlines.[4]

Accident

The entirety of the flight was normal. The aircraft then started approaching Bocas Del Toro Airport (BOC/MPBO). At around 10 pm local time the aircraft landed on runway 27. A video showed that the plane, shortly after landing, ran off the right side of the runway. The plane then impacted trees and vegetation, and came to rest on its belly about 1000 from the centreline, suffering major structural damage to the tail. The vertical stabilizer detached and the wings bended.[2][5] Air Panama declared the accident an hull loss. All occupants survived but 12 people were injured, including the pilot which suffered from a broken wrist.[6][7]

Aftermath

Operations at Bocas del Toro Airport were halted after the crash, and resumed after a day on May 17.

After the accident Panama City mayor, Mayer Mizrachi, stated on X that Bocas del Toro airport infrastructures are insufficient and unsafe, and that a new proper airport is needed.[8] The aircraft had about 1135 liters of fuel on board, which, after the crash, the Panamanian authorities are trying to dispose of safely.[9]

Investigation

The Civil Aviation Authority of Panama declared that both flight data recorders of the aircraft were recovered, and that an investigation was started. The statements given by the pilots to the investigators ruled out the theory, that was spreading in the first hours after the crash, that the accident was caused by people standing on the runway.[10]
